An empty nest, but a full heart. As part of my summer plan to diversify my TBR, I just finished Becoming an Empty Nester, by Pilar Kellenbarger, a guidebook brimming with practical and heartfelt advice for the suddenly quiet household. Being a parent of a certain age, I instantly related to the tone and the well-timed mix of pragmatic and humorous anecdotes.

Divided into five parts and 50 chapters, Kellenbarger runs the gamut from the self-realization of where you are to the acceptance and aspirational tenor of what's to come. Although each is a gem, I especially liked Let Them Be Who They Are (Chapter 9), Reminisce the Fun Times (Chapter 15), and Get Out of Your Rut (Chapter 45). Change is hard, but what are you waiting for? This book will provide the inspiration.

Beyond the timely advice and well-crafted prose, one thing struck me most about this book. The author must’ve produced extraordinary children and cultivated a home welling with love, safety, and acceptance. Wisdom comes from experience, and Kellenbarger’s authenticity shines throughout.
