When a brother and sister run out of tape while trying to wrap their dad's birthday present, they use various other sticky substances to make the paper stick. Rookie Readers (Ages 5-7) have provided entertaining, high-quality introductions to reading for more than a generation. Each title features full-color, often hilarious illustrations and engaging stories that always involve a young child figuring out concepts or solving problems on his or her own.
This is a great book for Kindergarten through 2nd graders. Students in this age group will likely relate to the siblings’ excitement and their attempt to fix a problem on their own. The humor and messy outcome also matches the playful, concrete thinking common in early childhood.
The story focuses on problem-solving, creativity, sibling relationships, and consequences. It also touches on cause and effect, as the brother and sister try to solve one small problem (running out of tape) and end up creating a much bigger mess.
I would add this book to my classroom library because it reflects real-life situations that young children can very much and easily relate to. I can relate to and I am a young adult. Growing me and my brother were always doing things like so, to be resourceful. I would use this book to talk about problem-solving and thinking through decisions before acting. It would also be a fun read-aloud to discuss cause and effect, especially in early elementary grades. The humor and messiness make it engaging and fun, while still offering a learning opportunity.
Oh my goodness. I can relate to not having any tape to wrap a present but the kids in this book are inventive. It was funny how they used everything they could think of sticky to wrap a present. I can see my kids doing this for sure. this was a funny book with funny illustrations.p
