This book is along the same lines as "We", "1984", "Brave New World", and "Anthem". This book was written in 1957, not long after being dismissed from his position at Los Angeles State College. His dismissal was in response to his appearance, as an unfriendly witness, before the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1953. It would be years before he was welcome to teach in a college again.
