Russian theoretician Leon Trotsky or Leon Trotski, originally Lev Davidovitch Bronstein, led the Bolshevik of 1917, wrote Literature and Revolution in 1924, opposed the authoritarianism of Joseph Stalin, and emphasized world; therefore later, the Communist party in 1927 expelled him and in 1929 banished him, but he included the autobiographical My Life in 1930, and the behest murdered him in exile in Mexico.

The exile of Leon Trotsky in 1929 marked rule of Joseph Stalin.

People better know this Marxist. In October 1917, he ranked second only to Vladimir Lenin. During the early days of the Soviet Union, he served first as commissar of people for foreign affairs and as the founder and commander of the Red Army and of war. He also ranked among the first members of the Politburo.

After a failed struggle of the left against the policies and rise in the 1920s, the increasing role of bureaucracy in the Soviet Union deported Trotsky. An early advocate of intervention of Army of Red against European fascism, Trotsky also agreed on peace with Adolf Hitler in the 1930s. As the head of the fourth International, Trotsky continued to the bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, and Ramón Mercader, a Soviet agent, eventually assassinated him. From Marxism, his separate ideas form the basis of Trotskyism, a term, coined as early as 1905. Ideas of Trotsky constitute a major school of Marxist. The Soviet administration never rehabilitated him and few other political figures.

It’s a pretty straightforward & mundane read. I’m reading it after I read Trotsky’s biography of Stalin & will be reading 2 of his other writings “The Third International after Lenin” (1928) & “The Class Nature of the Soviet State” (1933). Im doing so out of personal curiosity after having read his biography of Stalin & “The Revolution Betrayed” to see his progression to his mature thought on Stalinism. It was a phenomenon he had to analyze essentially in real time which is no easy feat.

In this pamphlet, you can see the beginnings of what Stalin was doing via falsification which helped solidify & maintain his power. It’s a shame precious time & energy had to be wasted to combat it so that others would not be led astray. Seeing as how it was about orders given with the advent of the New Economic Policy to get Russia up to speed economically, which was really a less desirable but pragmatic course taken due to Lenin’s failing health, shows the lengths Stalin would go to maintain power. Very mundane just the facts & to the point read.

Particularly Chapter 5.

Deutscher's wonderful biography makes the case that this pamphlet was seized by Stalin and other Trotsky enemies as "proof" that Trotsky was trying to sow division in the Bolsheviks party. This is the time period where the cult of "Leninism" replaces Leninism.

Trotsky is arguing for continued debate based on reality, as opposed to immortalizing Lenin's words during a specific period of time, and using that "tradition" as a blunt object against any internal discord.

It is a fascinating time period, because in it you can see the seeds of what will later be the mass purges.

Trotsky advocates and fights for a worker's democracy in the Soviet Union rather than a bureaucratic dicatorship which was occurring under Stalin. Fascinating and informative book that plants the seeds for the failure of the Bolshevick revolution.

A booklet made of multiples articles Trotsky wrote on 1923 (and published in 1924) about the problems that were in the bolshevik party (mostly bureaucratism but also fractionism and the link of the party to the mass) that is definitely a very good read to take a look on the problem of the USSR on this time. A very interessting article is Tradition and revolutionnary politic wich review what have made the succes of the leninist party (not to fall in automatism and always having a critical review of his acts) and in wich ways this leninist party is different from the socialdemocrat party (SPD) in Germany.

An interesting but ultimately not very useful (without secondary material) window into Trotsky’s conception of where the USSR was going, prior to socialism in one country.
