When the summer begins to approach, go out to meditate in the meadows. When every bush of the field begins to return to life and grow, they all yearn to be included in your prayer. Rebbe Nachman gave pride of place to the spontaneous, improvised prayer uttered in one's own language and springing from the heart hitbodedut. This handbook of his teachings on prayer includes Rabbi Kaplan's scholarly introduction setting hitbodedut in its context in the history of Jewish prayer and meditation.
R. Aryeh Kaplan's translation of Reb Alter of Teplik's 'Hishtapkut HaNefesh' (Outpouring of the Soul), which is a compilation of prayer-related teachings from Rebbe Nachman. This edition also includes R. Kaplan's scholarly introduction, which sets hitbodedut in its context in the history of Jewish prayer and meditation. Well compiled and useful overall, as it gives each passage's references in LM and elsewhere, so they can be looked up and studied in detail if the reader wishes.
Another of Reb Alter of Teplik's great little compilations, translated by Aryeh Kaplan. This one present Rebbe Nahman's teachings on Hitbodedut, extemporaneous and affective prayer.
I ordered this book with the understanding that it would detail Nachman’s hitbodedut and other various approaches to meditation. It’s content was less general and more religion specific then I was expecting and so I was unfamiliar with many of the scriptures and terms.
I have found ‘Crossing the narrow path’ a more enjoyable read including most of the more accessible concepts from this book and more.
