This book defied what I usually do with my rules-- generally I read the books in a series and books that I have already begun. Because I was home, I had to read something and wanted to read something that would not take very long to finish. This was the case with Soul of the Heights.
This book focuses on one of the early mountaineering bums in the Western states, Ed Cooper. His rise to fame as a bold climber of the volcanoes of Oregon and Washington and his later entrance into the world of outdoor photography. His prose is some of the worst I've ever read as he retells the story of his climbing biography. His photos however are spectacular! Seeing mountains that I've climbed including Three Fingered Jack remind me of the love I have for these NW mountains.
The book is for coffee tables and not meant to be read straight thru. As it happens though, reading it gave me some sense of the danger of the early years climbing in Yosemite and in the NW. I'd love to have this in my home to look through the pictures again but I would not read it again.
