Different and intriguing story with insights into the (awful) Spanish Civil War

What a marvellous book - the development of the main characters and their relationships is extremely strong and very realistic. What I personally found highly satisfying was how realistic the emotions and thoughts of each of the main characters were given that they are from three different generations. The plot is also highly credible (could be true?) but deals sensitively with the horrors of the Spanish civil war without taking sides. The imagery is also very well developed - one can easily visualise both the characters and the locations (I am an anglo spaniard and live in Spain so can relate to the location, culture and issues involved). It is a joy to read a well written story which does not attempt to lecture or educate the reader but just to tell them an interesting story in such a way which makes for an enjoyable and informative read.
