Autism in the School-Aged Child

Rate this book
The purpose of this book is to build on the strong foundation of discrete trial training, expanding the ability of the higher-functioning child with autism to learn in "real world" settings. The established principles of behavioral interventions, which are instrumental in the education of children with autism, are often discarded as the child matures. These principles are more difficult to establish in the natural setting of school or home, which contain previously controlled variables in the one-on-one setting. Rather than abandoned the principles that have produced success, parents and educators should recognize that children with autism have a unique style of learning that must be considered in a variety of settings. This book combines practical strategies, ideas, and suggestions aligning the home and school settings. Autism in the School Aged Child offers a unique resource to parents and teachers at a time when the incidence of autism is increasing. Online book available at autisminschool.com

This book was very helpful in explaining behavioral strategies for children with autism.

It covers how to identify and define the target behavior
reinforcement
keeping the number of targets small (multiple targets can become one SD)
How to teach children to stay on task in school (fading prompts - visual schedules/note cards, etc.).
How to limit verbal obsessions
How target behavior checklists develop and change overtime.
preschool checklists (half day beginning or half day end).
Kindergarten-1st Grade checklists (full day beginning or full day end)
Homework and Getting ready for school checklist
Common problems and problem solving strategies
What can help in the classroom (less visual distractions)
Advantages and Disadvantages of revealing a diagnosis to a teacher
General information about autism
Fading the use of an aide
off task/behaviors
social play
independent play
rewarding play
chores and responsibilities around the house
daily living
cooperation and socialization
importance of rules and consequences
how to create task cards
reading and writing strategies (very short and not very helpful)

Some tasks will need to be edited depending on the needs of your child.
A very informational book.

"Teach Me Language" manual by Freeman and Dake is an excellent resource for improving language in children with autism and related disorders.

"reading milestones" A linguistically- controlled reading series.
