Sometimes the purest love lies in the most dangerous places... Clara James, debutante daughter to a wealthy New York banker, is already tired of men. Especially the ones her father wants her to marry! When her father, Jefferson, buys a gold claim out west, she sees it as a last chance to escape the doldrums of society life, and to live on her own terms. What Clara never expected was to fall head over heels for their trail guide, Eli Masterson, when she first laid eyes on him.
Will the ruggedly handsome Eli, who has been by turns a Civil War scout, a miner at the Comstock, and is now leading the James's stagecoach to Deadwood, fall just as hard for her, or is he fated to a lonely life on the range?

I really liked this, until the end. It's not that the end disappointed me, but the way it happened. That's my own personal taste in books and genres though. The book itself I do like - the heroine was elegant and classy, yet practical and willing to get her hands dirty - exactly the way I prefer my heroines! The outlaw was rough with a heart of gold, which is cliche, but enjoyable to read nevertheless! I will probably read it again at some point, but I'm glad I've read it and I would recommend it too. The plot is a bit different to anything I've read before and definitely intriguing.
So this story started off really good and promising. The setup really prepared you for adventure in the Wild West but at some point it kind of lost its momentum. Then came a part where it just seemed rushed and therefore uneventful and I just wanted to get it done. Not a book I would recommend. My rating of two stars shows that although it is not the worst I have read I did expect more and I did enjoy the beginning. I would also not mind giving this author another try in the future.
This was certainly a wild romp out the trail west to Deadwood with infamous characters, a hero who is friendly with the raiding natives, and gold in the hills, fortunes to be made and lost and claims changing hands. Definitely a fun read with romantic interludes that were sweet even though the dialogue was a little over the top for my taste. I recommend this to readers who like romance and action in a quick one-two punches.
