Rate this book
Give up his dream or go for exactly what he wants?

Sam Grau never planned on seeing his former best friend again. One-night stands worked well enough to ease his heartache and loneliness...except he wanted more. He’s got a choice—chase his dreams or the man he loves. He can’t have both.

Josh Thomas never gave up on finding the one man who understood him down to the cellular level. He walked away once, but not a second time. He’s willing to sacrifice his heart and pride to show his quirky friends the men they’ve both become, all in the name of saving Sam.

Life is tough for someone who has dreams, yet cannot seem to fulfill them because he has a knack for self-sabotage. Sometimes they need saving – from themselves and the life they have ended up with. This is the story of one such couple – ideally suited to "save each other", but they should take their time to realize this!

Sam was rejected by his parents when he came out, and his best friend left for greener pastures at the end of college. As a result Sam has become very good at self-sabotage – he dreams of becoming a GLBTQ youth counselor, yet looks too much like a kid for the "powers that be" to take notice of who he really is. Sam wants a happy relationship, but ends up pushing away the men he ends up having one-night stands with – just in case they leave him. Sam definitely needs saving, that is for sure!

Interestingly, the man to do the saving is the best friend who left Sam because, at the time, he felt he needed to sort out his own life. Now that he has done that, he is back with a vengeance. I'm not sure I can really respect him for doing that – if he is such a great friend, how can he leave Sam to his own devices and selfishly follow his own dreams without even trying to make things work? But then again, I guess we all make mistakes.

If you like stories about men who are their own worst enemies, yet eventually learn to overcome this shortcoming when they team up together, if you enjoy reading about flawed characters, and if you're looking for a short, entertaining read with a bit of redemption for past sin, then you will probably like this short story.

My Review:
This is a friends to lovers book...but it's been a relationship that's been on hold for ten years. Ten years ago, they were best friends and now they don't even keep in touch, although they both had deep feelings for each other at the time. Neither one ever told the other how they felt ten years ago, but those harbored feelings are both really still there. I liked that set-up and would have liked the book better if it had been left at that.

But there's a lot to the story. Honestly I think it was too much detail/too much conflict for such a short book because none of it felt quite right or adequately explained and resolved.
*There's the history between the men.
*There was a bit of discussion about Sam's (I think it was Sam) emotionally charged upbringing.
*Sam is also in the middle of trying to establish a new career...and there was some real confusion to that part of the story because Josh lives in another town, but he talks with someone about Sam's ability to work at this center with someone in power, but from what I understood, Josh is new to the area, is an air traffic controller, and lives in a whole other town. Why would he have anything to do with the hiring at a youth center program?
*Sam is a man-whore, but wants a real relationship.

This could have been a really amazing book, but for me, it just fell a little bit short. The bond that should have been there between the two men just didn't translate emotionally for me on the page. I kept feeling like there was a little something missing to all the many layers of the story.

Is it too late to pretend I didn't read this? Regardless, I'm going to pretend. This author and I just do not mesh. That's all I really want to say.

Saving Sam is the second book in the Zero, Ohio series by author Megan Slayer. This book is my first in the Zero, Ohio series and I was not lost at all. It is a complete stand alone story.
Sam is a bartender who lives life on his own terms. He has piercings, funky hair, and body art to prove it. He has a huge heart and wants to help GLBT youth, so they will never have the pain he had growing up.
I really adored Sam. I love a bad boy with a soft heart. He has had kicks in life but they never keep him down. That spirit really made me cheer for him. He also has an adorable Rottie named Ziggy that had me at hello in this book.
When Josh takes a friend to the Eight Ball Bar he doesn’t expect to run into the man who plagued him with wet dreams when he was growing up. Sam used to be his best friend but somewhere along the way Josh went from tattooed pierced, and colorful hair to the conservative man he is now. Seeing Sam brings back all the memories of how he should have never let him go.
Problem is, Sam doesn’t think he is good enough. Don’t worry Josh is very convincing in the most creative of ways.
The character connection and love between these two make this book a very memorable read. I didn’t want this book to end. I like how Ms. Slayer makes me fall in love with her characters and cheer for them to have their happy ending. Saving Sam is the book you pick up when you want to believe that sometimes the good guys really do finish first after all.

Wow. . this book is pretty awful. The dialogue is practically painful. The entire thing just didn't make sense. Their relationship didn't make sense. Their conversations would jump all over the place with no purpose. The characters did things that didn't make sense at all. Like why go all the way home to let the dog out then go all the way back to the diner stay for 5 minutes not even order anything then go back home? ??? Odd right? Or right after receiving a bj asks the guy if he could make a call on his behalf for a job he's applied for. . what? ! And Then while one character is randomly pouring his heart out while stripping naked in supposed prep for sex the other character thinks in his head " Yay all of my love and emotion for this man was not one sided during c ollege".... then he says nothing in response.
I got through abt 70% but I'm totally done. I'm sorry but I don't get it.

Way too short and I just felt like things were missing. Things would happen that weren't explained all that well.
