After losing her mother to suicide, Emily Jewel has spent nine months trying to forget about her dead mother’s ghost. She has an excellent foster family, Jim and Laura, but it’s not until she sees Mason Killinger that she realizes something might just be missing from her life. She spends her days either on the computer doing schoolwork or volunteering at the local animal shelter.

Mason has just finished getting his veterinarian technician degree, and for the first time in his life he’s starting a job that has meaning to him. His mother died when he was two, and his father had a tough time dealing with raising two very young boys. Maybe it’s because they don’t understand him or he just never tried hard enough, but Mason has not meant the girl for him yet. Until he lays eyes upon Emily at the animal shelter he’s currently employed at.

She’s a tough nut to crack, but he’s slowly starting to get through the cold shell. This is the first story of Emily and Mason.

2.5 stars this is a nice and quick read. The cover is HOT. Emily's mother committed suicide nine months ago and she still struggling with the loss and nightmares. She has a knack for dealing with animals and works as a volunteer at the animal shelter.
Mason just got his veterinarian technician degree, and he starts his first job at the shelter were Emily works.
By working together they start a friendship that slowly becomes more.
The love building is done correctly no instant love. Mason is a nice character. I had a lot of questions about Emily why doesn't she seek help for her emotional and sleep problems? Did she found her mother?
Emily is a nice character but she doesn't come over as strong, she broken. I don't feel she is a fighter she prefers to avoid situations. I hope she grows some confidence in book 2.

The writer did an excellent job with describing the shelter you can feel the love off the animals and workers.
