Sara Fraser, a solitary artist, is haunted by her dreams of a past life where she is deeply in love—a concept and experience foreign to her waking existence. Just as she is becoming known for her artistic endeavors, Sara launches a new series of paintings based on her dreams.
Robert Masters, a journalist in a passionless marriage, interviews Sara about her latest work, only to discover a personal connection to her paintings: it seems he is the man in her dreams. But when Robert, a man who prefers to peer inside others’ lives instead of his own, suddenly finds the intrigue of a possible shared history catapulting him into an intense romance with Sara, a story from the past begins to haunt both of them. As the lovers contemplate leaving the waking world to follow their dreams, the possibility of happiness dictates them to take risks they never could have imagined before.
The Seed is a romance with a dark undertow - a story of truth, loss, and the price two people must pay for love.
By day I work in an office environment as a senior human resources manager, but that pays the bills rather than nourishing my heart.
I come to Goodreads for that soul nourishment - the love of books, reading and writing. The love of communicating and inter-acting with people who share similar loves and interests. The love of starting a new journey as a self published author, a new way to express myself and how I view the world that is totally different to my day to day concerns.
I write poetry, novels and prose to express in very broad terms different aspects of the elements. My first novel The Seed is about love and its consequences, and so expresses Water. My next novel will be a black comedy and so expresses Air. And so forth. It means that my novels, like my poetry, will cross genres, so I hope that isn't too confusing! What it all has in common is the exploration of what makes us human, what makes us do what we do and be who we are.
My poetry blog at Wordpress gives a good idea of the way I write and the themes I use. It also has details of where my novel The Seed can be purchased if this interests you. It can be found at:
Might I just say, SWEET HALLELUJAH IT IS ABOUT TIME SOMEONE WROTE A ROMANCE THAT ISN'T FLUFFY!
Sorry about that...now then, my review:
I was reading this book when I had an epiphany--this is the kind of writing that is worth reading. This may sound odd, but truly--in a world with so many different varieties, genres and categories of books you rarely cross one that makes time stop and makes you feel like you have left your own life and become part of another person's. In my opinion, this book will do that for you. It did for me.
While reading this novel, I realised that I had not bothered to look up from the pages for over an hour. The descriptive language that Helen Valentina uses when talking about her character's lives, emotions and her setting made me forget most everything else in the world. I read this book late in the evening when I could be alone with it and truly appreciate the poetic nature of her passages.
As mentioned above, one of my favourite things about this book was that it was not the conventional fluffy romance that has become so popular. These characters have problems. They have emotions. They have bad things happen to them that they must sort through in order to survive and to reach their goals. Reading this novel will remind you how precious life is, how limited our view of the future is and that we are all at the mercy of the unknown. Still, it will also remind you that there are miracles in this world and love is one of them.
I really enjoyed seeing characters that had flaws and problems that didn't feel contrived and like they were only there because the author had to make something wrong with their creations just for good measure.
If you are looking for a beautifully written book that you can get fully into, forget everything else and will provoke both laughter and tears in you, may I recommend "The Seed." I am looking forward to many more books from this author in the future. She is on my to watch list from this point forward.
Characters that stay with you long after the last page has been turned are few and far between. Helen Valentina has found a way to do just that with this gripping story about love, fate, destiny and personal strength. Even now, a few days later, the images she has created continue to haunt me. A thoroughly enjoyable if at times disturbing read. Every character is rich with flaws and emotions, damaged pasts and real experiences. These characters feel so very real.
Helen Valentina provides a feast of images from descriptions of artwork to a variety of locations in and around Sydney to the inner workings of the mind and her truly accurate portrayals of secondary characters seem as wholly developed and emotionally resonant as the leading roles. This is not a conventional romance, and it is all the better for it. There is truth here, if you delve deep enough to see it, which is at times scary and honest and definitely thrilling. If you read a lot, you must read this, if you are not a big reader, read this anyway. I can’t’ wait to read more from Helen Valentina!
Definitely not what I was expecting. The storyline was compelling. But there were way too many words for my liking. I felt like reading this was work. I think this could be a better book with some judicious editing. The characters were fleshed out...maybe too much. But the overall premise was very good. I'm glad I stuck with it and finished it, but it was hard reading for me. Not everyone, obviously, feels the same way I do though. This is just my opinion.
