Ralph Reed is a perennial commentator on CNN, NBC, CBS, and Fox News, who has a support database of 18 million voters. He has advised presidential candidates for the last six election cycles. Highly respected by conservatives and liberals alike, Reed outlines why and how our country will awaken from its current destructive path and return to a new age of blessing.
I unfortunately received a free copy of this book through the First-Reads giveaway.
Awakening is about the apparent moral and economical decline of modern day America and how it can pull itself back from this decline. The author (Ralph Reed) writes for an audience that have certain (assumed) positions, that is to say, Christians. Although I am not a Christian, this review will still aim to be objective. I will take the author to task based on what is written and what he argues for.
Towards the beginning of the book, the author makes the claim that the United States is a Christian nation. To support this claim, the author quotes several Founding Fathers (FF)that seem to support the notion that the United States was indeed founded by Biblically inspired men. The author goes on to say, "Western civilization is based on the notion that civil law should reflect the order of nature and of the nature's God, laws against murder, laws against perjury, and laws against theft and fraud find their interpretation in the Ten Commandments and the Mosaic laws."
Now, putting aside the fact that these laws are not found in the list of laws that the Bible specifically refers to as the "Ten Commandments" (Exodus 34:13-28), everyone of them are secular in nature. Every nation has these same four laws (although not always fairly enforced). They can all be arrived to entirely by secular thought. So to say that the United States is a "Christian Nation" because our (FF) were inspired by the Bible to write secular (and "biblical") laws is to not say much to address the point. The author does not point out which laws are uniquely Christian (inspired), if any. Our FF concluded that owning and regulating slaves was appropriate. Were these conclusions inspired by Christian thought? And if they were, are we under any obligation to follow these conclusion? Of course not, laws should be arrived to by rational thought alone. So to make any appeal to what inspired our FF to make such laws is a fallacy. A fallacy that is found throughout the book.
The main problem with Christian books that call for action is that they are predictable. What is the best way for the United States to get out from this moral decline? SPOILER ALERT! By getting closer to God, of course. The author repeats this point over and over again throughout parts 1 and 2 of the book. The author quotes the generic verses found in the Bible that coincide with whatever generic topic he is talking about. There is nothing entirely groundbreaking with this approach. At the end of every chapter the author gives "action point" for the reader to consider. Most of the action points are all fairly simple. Read this verse of the Bible, talk about a certain topic with a church study group, write your congressman. One specific action point actually encourages the Christian reader to consider whether or not the Israelites are God's "chosen people." (They are) It's not until part 3 that the author gives some specifics of how he imagines that the U.S. can turn itself around. And again, it's all predictable. limited government, tax breaks, personal responsibility.
This is not a very original or intriguing book. If you are a Christian whom watches Fox News on a regular basis, you've heard it all before. In conclusions, I cannot recommend this book to any person whom values rational thought in a rational world.
I saw this book on the "New Books" at the library and although Mr. Reed does present his opinion boldly, as a Christian I was very disappointed. I am also a feminist - which in my lingo means I believe in equal opportunity for women at all levels of society. Mr. Reed is an attractive looking white male that wants to run the country as a Christian society. That said, he presents a very standard GOP/Tea Party view of how our country should be run and I too, agree that most in Washington DC should be sent home, but I don't believe the founding fathers every saw our country as anything beyond a secular society.
His Pro-Family views on benefits through the tax code are unique in that it is all centered on married families and increasing the birth rate! Why do we need more children when we aren't taking care of the ones we have? His action plans DO NOT include making sure all children are raised in to their full potential. His rhetoric talks about the perils of children in non-marriage homes but does not give any action to reaching out to the world as we were taught “Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" Matthew 7:9-11
Fixing America means fixing it for all of us, not just the Christian conservatives. If you want to speak pro-life please show me that you are helping to nurture, protect, educate, house and keep healthy all the children, not just those born to a married man & women.
The final chapter lists "What you can Do" and nowhere does it mention what Jesus spoke: "And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.” Matthew 22:36-40
None of these six ideas speak to me about living the life of a Christian but here they are: 1. Pray. Me: Yes, this is important to a better life, home and country. Regardless of your religion, this can work. 2. Be informed and educated. Me: again, something we all should be doing. Good advice until the list of media to watch - all conservative. I believe to make educated decisions, we must learn all sides of a situation. If I only read/listen to liberal ideas I'll only know liberal ideas. 3. Become involved in a political party. Good advice and fairly presented. 4. Build relationships with your elected officials. Me: Good advice, hard to do if you don't agree on the basics as I've been trying since 2012. 5. Join a Public Policy Organization. Me: Reed's list is his list, we should build our own that reflect our desires. To do nothing means your views will not have life. 6. Persuade, don't Preach. Ah Ha - on page 224 (hard bound) Reed does say "I urge people to study both sides of an issue before they meet with an elected official or member of their staff" and that is exactly why I took the time to read this book.
I have read a few of Ralph Reed's Christian fiction books, and have been extremely impressed, not just at his ability to write a great political fiction novel, but at his insight into politics. This book sounded interesting enough, but when I saw he was the author, I figured it would be worth reading, and I was right.
There are many Christians who feel religion and politics don't mix, and some who feel we should stay out of politics and stop fighting abortion and gay marriage. Many feel we should just pray and not do anything about the mess our country is in.
Reed shows in his book that politics and religion DO mix, and although we need a great spiritual awakening in this country, we still need to do our duty and get involved also.
The author covers the awakenings in the past in America, and what led up to, and what followed them, and shows that we are ripe for another awakening. There are a lot of insights into some of the presidents the author as worked with, and met, even Barak Obama. There is some interesting history given, and hope.
I know our country is a mess. Socially, economically, spiritually, and morally. But after reading what our country was like before other awakenings, I feel encouraged that God could still move on our country again and bring about true hope and change.
This isn't a book that just bashes our current administration, thought the author does address what is wrong with it. It is a book that doesn't just give some vague ideas of what we need to do to change. The author gives some definite and great ways we can turn our country around.
I enjoyed the book. It was an interesting read. The author really knows his stuff about politics, and if his ideas were followed, we'd be a lot better shape. I definitely recommend this one.
Awakening, by Ralph Reed, how America can turn from economic and moral destruction back to greatness is an incredible read. The first question that is asked, is "Are we watching our nation commit suicide?" "Is America, like a crumbling modern-day Roman Empire, doomed to inevitable decline and demise?" Hard questions straight off the bat in the first chapter. Mr. Ralph Reed takes you through what is going on in America today.
At the end of chapter, there are action points, some might be scripture, or reading the Bill of Rights, or writing the editor of your local paper. The action points go along with the chapter that you just read.
I really like this book. I am glad the author brought the language of the book down to the everyday American. Not everyone has been to college. Not everyone knows political terms. So, it was really nice to be able to read a book like Awakening and be able to understand it. I really like the action points. It makes me, the reader want to do more, know more about what is going on. Why we should be believing a certain way, or why we should be thinking a different way. The author uses the action points to get us to understand the needs of America. What America has gone through and where we are headed.
I interpreted the overall message of this book as a call to all Americans to seek God first. Definitely a Christian book authored by a Christian, but don’t let this deter you. God may be calling to you through this book.
I read this book as recommended on a show in the programming of what is considered a largely conservative network. I am a Christian and relatively familiar with the Bible. From that perspective, a lot of what Ralph wrote made sense to me. But as another reviewer wrote, or implied, a lot of what Ralph wrote could be equally argued from a secular viewpoint.
My take away is that regardless of party affiliation, every person who believes in God should seek His counsel and will through prayer and a heart open to receiving such through the Holy Spirit. For a person who doesn’t believe in God, this could be off putting. Or, a person who doesn’t believe in God and reads this book may be persuaded to reconsider their belief.
I found many details of Ralph’s writings interesting and helpful for retaining and forming new perspectives. I did not vet his references though. Even as a Christian, I’m not sure how much I agree with certain assertions in Chapter 10 (Choosing the Chosen People), but then one does not have to agree 100% with someone else’s views to appreciate and contemplate them. Chapter 11 (The War on Christianity) had some sobering revelations.
One reviewer (Mole) claimed something to the effect that Ralph is trying to imply that “single mothers are the Devil’s servants”. I don’t think this is what Ralph is saying. I think he is trying to convince his audience that God’s ways are better than our ways, and that there are acceptable “worldly” ways of living and optimal “Godly” ways of living. When there is a choice, and some single parents (women and men) don’t have a choice, he is arguing for an intact family. I don’t perceive he is judging anyone, but rather attempting to support Biblical views on marriage and family. Again, there is great potential here for a reader to misinterpret the intended message or take offense. In general, I don’t perceive that Ralph is condemning anyone, but rather just sharing Biblical food for thought.
Ralph does argue that Christians need not withdraw from the political arena, but rather tries to demonstrate how Christians may effectively participate in it. At the end of each chapter, he does provide “Action Points” that could be helpful for a reader who asks themselves, “What should I do with this information?” Many of these points are rooted in the assumption that the reader is Christian or believes in God. But many action points could apply to a secular reader as well.
Although Ralph does give some good advice, it seems impractical for a citizen who is consumed with making a living, and perhaps responsible for the care of others, to make the time to pursue even a fraction of what he advises.
I gave this book four stars because although it was well written, it didn’t “wow” me, and I’m not sure I would read it again. I’m debating whether or not to keep it in my library. If you decide to read it, read it slowly and thoughtfully, one chapter at a time.
I was leaning toward a rating of 4, maybe even a 5, as I read through the first ~three quarters of the book. But the last chapter kinda / sorta turned me off. Then his "Six Guidelines for Being an Effective Christian Citizen" (at the end of the book) really stunned me! It's almost as if the book was / is written for the Christian who wants to be a politician. Or maybe, the author thinks every Christian should be a politician!! I am a Christian, but I'm not a politician, nor do I aspire to be one! I very much liked most of the book, but the end . . . .

Gonna start a "review" of this where I talk about the various points brought up in this book. Once I finish reading this book, I'll put an actual star review onto it. Preface: *Reed lists the dangers to American society as "children born out of wedlock" (because single mothers are the Devil's servants, I guess? Guess my grandma who raised me since I was a baby completely alone is a Satanist) and "redefinition of marriage" (because, y'know, traditional values good!) and just general vice. This is a very obtuse view of American society - a constantly changing and evolving system.
Where is America heading? What is to be the fate of this great nation; the grand democratic experiment? Any concerned American wishes he had the answers to these questions. It is these questions that Ralph Reed addresses in his latest volume Awakening: How America Can Turn From Economic and Moral Destruction Back to Greatness. Just what is in the future for the US of A?
Reed is the former executive director of the Christian Coalition. He is currently the founder and chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition. It is from this background of faith and cultural involvement that Reed has written Awakening.
The bottom line (please excuse the cliché) of this book is that we are in a cultural and spiritual war fighting for the moral code upon which our country was founded. It is a moral code that has been abandoned by our leaders and our citizens.
Reed analyzes all areas of our culture – politics, marriage to include same-sex marriage, racism, poverty and religious freedom – carefully detailing each subject and then reasoning for confidence in the people of our country.
Reed’s contention is that revival (awakening) in America is cyclical. Just when it seems that America is heading down the road to ruin, God provides a spiritual awakening. He begins with a historical account of “The Spiritual Cycle” in America expressing that there is reason to believe a new awakening is coming despite the current moral decay in the United States. He continues with a chronological walk through American history with an eye to our spiritual heritage.
He continues in Chapter Five, “The Reagan Revival,” with a condensed yet pointed biography of President Ronald Reagan that helps us to understand who he was and why he became the man that he was. It is a chapter well worth reading. In the sub-chapter “An Evangelical Ally” you will find a scenario from 1978 that is reminiscent to today. The positive result from that near identical scenario is in part what gives Reed hope.
Reed also provides us with some personal information when he describes the rise of the Christian Coalition and his involvement in it. It’s an interesting and forthright journey through the history of the organization detailing the early influence of the Christian Coalition and even its defeats. Regardless of what you may have thought of the Christian Coalition, it’s an honest account.
The most chilling chapter is “The War on Christianity” in which Reed takes the Obama administration to task on a number of issues that challenge the Christian faith – “Obamacare” and the IRS Harassment in particular. Reed does not withhold criticism accusing the administration of slight-of-hand and insensitivity when dealing with Christians.
Reed concludes with a final section challenging Americans and Christian in particular to wake up and get involved. The final chapter, “A Call to Christian Citizenship,” should confront every Christian with the obligation to get involved in some way in the political process.
In the end Reed has a message of hope: Hope that history will have another positive repeat performance. Hope for America and what it originally stood for. Hope that the people of this country will return to the moral values upon which it was founded.
This book should be loved and appreciated by Conservatives and it should be a stern wake up call for Christians. Read it and make up your own mind as to whether or not there is hope.
**This book was provided to me for the purpose of an honest and unbiased review.**
With Awakening by Ralph Reed, nothing is held back! The first sentence in the first chapter asks the question "Are we watching our nation commit suicide?" I myself know that every day I think things can't get any worse and then I watch the news and find that yes indeed things certainly can and are. The United States is living in a time of moral, social, and economic decline. Violence seems to be the normal, and foul language is something that is heard almost everywhere I go. Thing is there is hope, because God doesn't forsake the faithful, so it is never to late. While Awakening points out much of what is ailing our country, he also provides the spiritual path for healing it as well. An easy to read book broken down into three parts, and fifteen chapters that are very user friendly. Written in terms that anyone can understand, each chapter touches on a different topic, such as the spiritual cycle, the life of marriage, and the importance of strengthening the family. At the end of each chapter there are action points that might steer the reader toward scripture, or share some other bit of wisdom that pertains to the chapter read. I will say that the chapter that really spoke to me had to be the last one titled "A Call To Christian Citizenship" which really motivates the reader into action reminding that the movement toward renewal starts with each of us. A book that certainly provides fuel for thought. God will Bless America again if we find our way back to him, and Awakening will certainly help point it's readers in the right direction. Such a timely read that would be perfect for group study and discussion!
Ralph Reed in his new book, “Awakening” published by Worthy Publishing explains How America Can Turn from Moral and Economic Destruction Back to Greatness.
From the back cover: Can America be saved…or is it too late?
In Awakening, Reed provides practical steps and a bold plan that will restore America to greatness. Find out how you can be part of the awakening that will re-energize Americans to effective citizenship and renew our core values of faith, personal responsibility, and liberty. Such an awakening can happen today—and it begins with us.
There are signs that make it look as though it is all over for America. It happened to Rome, it happened to The Dutch, why should America be any different? In three parts Ralph Reed shows us why it is still possible to turn America’s decline around. Part One: In Motion, Part Two: Off Course and Part Three: Awakening. At the end of each chapter there are Action Points that will help fully deal with all that was learned in the chapter. If you are an American and believe that America can be great once again then this is the book for you.

Awakening calls American society to help turn the nation from it's current path and back to a nation that can make an impact for good. Ralph Reed goes through the history of America, showing how there have been spiritual awakenings in the past that have led to prosperity. It is a call to become more involved in politics and to take a stand for what you believe in. To be bold in your beliefs and take a stand for Christ centered principles.
Some of my favorite quotes from the book:
"We want victory now, and in our way of thinking, two to three decades of social struggles ought to be sufficient. But that is not God's way, and He operates on the time clock of eternity." pg 69
"So whether as a Republican or Democrat get involved, make a difference, and stand for what is good and honorable and worthy of praise." pg186
Politics cannot solve everything, but knowledge is power. Get involved and help make changes for the better.
I received this book from the Goodreads First Reads program.
Mr. Reed uses this book to give Christians the hope that if their families get right with God, if they pray that God’s will be done, and if they try to influence their lawmakers, then America will be pulled up out of her downward spiral. He is so positive of his position, that he includes action points to help the reader find the way to utilize what s/he learns here.
I found some of Mr. Reed’s historical evidence of God’s hands in aiding America intriguing. And some of his action points quite helpful, for all Americans not just Christians.
He seems a little harsh on the liqueur, but I’d chalk that up to his personal troubles with it.
Do be careful when you read this book. Unlike what Mr. Reed thinks, not all of us are suited to politics. It is a good book, and well worth your time to read it.
I won this book on Goodreads. I am sorry but after reading the first 2 pages I am unsure if I can finish this book. It is very "political" in the sense that it is saying that America is going to hell in a hand basket fast. I agree we are kinda screwed right now. But to come on this strong on 2 controversial issues with out giving the spiritual reasoning behind it is very turn offish to me on this book. I be leave in a higher power but wow. I am truly sorry I normally enjoy books that include "god" but this book seems to me to be using the word God to push the authors own political views. If I could of rated this a negative I think it is the first I would of.
