He can’t believe he was kidnapped and put in a pit, but it happened, and he has to find a way out of here before he goes wild and attacks the only other person locked up with him.

The problem is that person happens to be his mate, and if Brian wants to get them out of this alive, he has to convince the man that they need to mate with each other so he can have the strength to escape before their captors return and kill Zack.

The tenth book of this very entertaining series is all about a human, Zack, suddenly realizing that not only werewolves exist, but that there are also several factions that are at war with each other. He gets caught right in the middle of it, and worse, he's locked up with one of them who is about to go feral from the torture he's been subjected to. As for Brian, the one about to go crazy? He'll have to fight to remain rational enough not to kill his mate, but he also wants revenge against Lawrence, the alpha of Roarke's pack's biggest and most dangerous enemy.

Zack works at the diner in town, and has no idea that his brother has been changed into a werewolf, nor that there are several packs of them living nearby. He has no idea that supernatural creatures even exist. And when he gets captured as "food" for one of them, his reaction is purely instinctual, but not what you'd think. Yes, he panics at first, but he also has some sort of "feeling" that the creature with him isn't going to harm him, and, in fact, needs help. I thought it was pretty cute how he supports Brian in his luna form, and is actually disappointed when Brian has turned human by the next morning. Zack takes the whole situation pretty much in stride and decides to hang on until Brian gets tired of him.

Brian, on the other hand, is stunned to have found his mate, of all people, thrown in the cell with him. He knows he needs Zack's help to create the energy he needs to escape – via making love. I think Brian is very lucky to find Zack willing and interested in exploring some "physical activities" with him, but the energy gain is mutual, so that gives Zack reason to believe more is going on than he previously thought possible. Of course, Brian is completely smitten by now…and any thought of ever letting Zack go is totally unacceptable.

This story is pretty much an adventure for both partners. Zack gets to know a whole new world and, being curious rather than timid, takes it all rather well. Brian may be afraid he'll scare Zack, and is relieved they end up exploring each other rather than one of the fighting the mating – as happens so often. Their situation and how they dealt with it provided a nice change of pace for me, while still adding more information to the series story arch. With Leon and Eli, the strange shifters with all sorts of weird information, still around, I'm sure this series will remain interesting for a while.

If you like shifter stories where the human mate is curious rather than scared, if you enjoy reading about mates who do well together from the beginning and decide to fight their enemies together, and if you're looking for a book with lots of hot action between the sheets, and everywhere else, then you will probably like this novella.

I definitely liked Zack and Brian in this installment. I liked the way they met, and how it all worked out. Again, I'm fascinated by what's going on with Leon and Eli, although Bastion is breaking my heart. I can't wait to see how the author plans on resolving this giant conundrum.

A few random comments:


1. I feel the "romantic suspense" label Siren gave it is stretching it a lot. First, this is closer to pure erotica than romance and second, where is the suspense suppose to be? In the kidnapping? That was over pretty quickly. They were on the run, but again, that was very short. And they had time for sex. Surely, they didn't fear for their lives to much. Heh. This book and this series has very little of what I would deem "suspense"

2. Why so much sex?
I get it's erotica, but damn. The sex totally overtakes the stories. There's PAGES and PAGES of sex scenes and very little plot or characterization. I find myself skipping the pages. Why? It gets old (especially if reading many in a row), drags on and since I don't feel like the MCs share a connection in a real way (besides the "oh, we're mates and in heat" thing), I can't bring myself to get into it or care (most of the time, they feel like strangers sharing an extended fucking session!). I think a balance is best -- sex (erotica) while showing the start of a relationship (romance). And really, in her other books there was more of a balance. Even though there were flaws, I could see the start of a connection with the mates, them trying to get to know each other and yes, having sex, but as part of a wider relationship (not marathon fuck session). I don't understand why she took this direction, but I'm not really a fan of it.

This proving how strong the mate pull is or can be... though even that can be strained at first meet.

Lawrence's spiel is getting a little old for me so I'm really hoping that we get a change up soon. As far as future related stuff, still trying to wrap my mind around implications.

Zach... hmmm I originally got the impression that he was the bigger of the two brothers but seems he's not. We did not see mention of possible conversion in any way so hopefully will be a side mention in one of the next books.

no. no. no. no. I felt like I wasted my time and money on this. I do hate giving awful reviews no matter... but this didn't work for me. no plot of anything. the feel of the book was on fast forward then skip skip skip. the main characters had no dimension. you couldn't (if you tried) even connect with them as individuals or as a couple. wish this did something for me. but I won't let this ruin any other books by this author. as I have read a few of her others and while not amazing, they were enough to keep me interested and satisfied.

I always pictured Zach to be more alpha in previous books. But in his own story he comes off way more twinkish than I had pictured. He also had always been negative and a little controlling of his brother Daren... downright grumpy. But hey he was the exact opposite! A little strange. ..

I just wish these books were longer to give more room for the plot, let us know the characters deeper, less sex scenes too. 2-3 chapters straight it too much.
