This is a beautiful book. The art itself gave me goosebumps and brought me to tears. The passages spoke greatly of Monet, showcasing his greatest works, his personality, even maybe his sense of humor. I felt as if I really knew him, reading this book. I started crying toward the end when Monet bought flowers that would bloom later and he said that he knew he wouldn’t get to see them because he would be gone by then. He was a genius, despite the fact that he would have disliked to be called that. His devotion for his work is unmatched. If he saw a flaw in his works, he couldn’t bare to look at it, so much so that he destroyed his paintings and burned them if he believed them to be unsatisfactory. He saw painting as this source of frustration because he felt as if he could never get the painting to be “just right.” I really loved this book. It was very informational and very beautiful. It’s a strange feeling when an informational book like this one can bring you to tears. I felt like I was a part of the world reading it. The vocabulary used is like no other. I would highly suggest reading this.

A wonderful, truly wonderful, book, not just for the many color photos of Monet paintings, but for the collection of essays, news articles, letters, and assorted notes from and by his friends, contemporary artists, critics, buyers, and journalists. To have these contemporary insights into the mind of Monet and the milieu of his time and place is nothing less than marvelous.
