Former Las Vegas homicide detective Jim Snow's luck has been going from bad to worse, spurred by a series of rash decisions and a quickly developing mid-life crisis.
He quit the force a few years ago to play poker for a living and has been losing steadily for months. His money is running out - and so is his live-in girlfriend. After one of Snow's poker buddies - a real estate investor and landlord who worked as a clown - is found shot to death in his home following their weekly game, Snow finds himself under suspicion by his former Metro Homicide partner, Marcia Stevens.
At forty-four, Snow is in the worst mess of his life. He's not sure what to do, who to turn to, or who to trust as he scrambles to stay one step ahead of an arrest warrant for first-degree murder. Smart and tightly plotted, Snow Adrift is the hardboiled origin story to Kusler's popular Las Vegas Mystery series.
Rex Kusler was born in Missouri and raised in a small town in Iowa. He spent his most formative years reading Mad Magazine and playing tiddlywinks. His writing began with a newsletter for a beer club he founded in San Jose in 1982. Soon afterward he tried his hand at short stories. After success selling some of them to a few regional magazines he began writing novels. Seven years, four novels, three agents, and a pile of rejection letters later, he gave up--for a while. In 2003 he wrote ANGELA. In 2009 he completed the first novel in his Las Vegas Mystery Series PUNCTURED, based on his experience selling his trailer for cash in an RV storage lot after dark. After success as a self-published e-book, it was re-released in May 2011 by Amazon Publishing. The second in the series is ASHES TO DUST, followed by DESERT DROP, and many others.
This book takes place earlier in Snows career. I did not like it as much as I like the stories with his partner Alice. Their relationship adds a lot to the stories. Book is alright
This is my twenty fourth book from goodreads that I have read. This book is about a former homicide detective, Jim Snow that has no luck at all. He gave up being a detective to start a career as a gambler. At first he is lucky gambling and then his luck starts spiraling down from bad to worse. Snow and some friends get together and play poker once a week. One of the friends,Adrian real estate investor and has a business as a clown is found shot to death in his home after a night playing poker. The guys that play poker are all married or live with female companions except for Adrian. The poker games go all night long, except Adrian always leaves at midnight. All the guys think Adrian is gay. After Adrian is killed Snow tells his live in girlfriend that Adrian has been murdered. She starts crying really hard and has a hard time of it. She starts arguing with Snow and the next day she moves out. Snows luck goes from bad to worse. His money is running out, his girlfriend moves out, and he finds himself under suspicion for the murder. You will find this story has all kinds of twists to it. I found this book really fun to read.
Good book. Another story in the Las Vegas Mystery series, but it's set prior to previous novels in the series.
Jim Snow is a former police detective who quit the force to become a professional poker player. After two-and-a-half years of playing success, he is on a three-month losing streak. He also has a weekly poker game with four other men, one of whom is killed after leaving one Friday night. The primary suspect appears to be Jim Snow due to his reluctance to take a polygraph.
Kusler writes Jim Snow three years younger quite successfully. Snow is Snow, only with much sharper edges. In fact, the whole story seems written three years earlier. The style seems to be three years earlier in Kusler's writing. Everything is rougher than the previous installments.
This is a pretty decent whodunnit. I figured out the who pretty early on, but the why eluded me. One day, maybe, if I work real hard, I can figure out the why of stories. Highly recommended.
Former Vegas homicide cop James "Jim" Snow quit the police for a life as a professional gambler. For a couple of years, he had a pretty good run. But for about six months, steady losing was putting a strain on his resources.
When a friend gets shot to death, Snow and several other friends come under suspicion. They, along with the dead man, had a weekly poker game and, on the night he was murdered, he'd been the big winner, a usual occurrence, but that had been a bigger winner.
A cop with an eye for Snow, problems with his current live-in, and friends suspicion that he might be the killer puts pressure on Snow.
Nevertheless, he pursues clues, stumbles across another murder with the same gun, and a killer he wished wasn't makes for an interesting tale.
This starts ok, but then ends poorly. It is never better than an average detective thriller, but with about 50 pages to go there is at least one completely pointless plot diversion before a very cursory wrapping up of the story. leaving a very unsatisfied feeling. I felt the author had just remembered something more important he had to do and decided to finish it as quickly as possible. Odd.
A former 44 year old detective, Jim Snow, from Las Vegas becomes a professional poker player. Has a winning streak that last a few years, now on a loosing streak. After a weekly poker game one of the men is killed. Jim becomes top suspect. Who did it? Why? Jim works to stay ahead of an arrest warrant for murder. A great read. Recommend this book.
Wasn't expecting the fourth book to be a prequel to book #1. I missed that in the description. However, that said, several things vs have become more clear and I think the future books might be better. On to #5.
Number 4 in the Jim Snow series, but it fills in the story before book 1. a double murder mystery - I guessed the culprit quite early on. The Jim Snow character is great fun.
