Only one year since the fabulous 1CAliases 1D and Russell Ragsdale has another book of verse on offer; and an excellent selection it is too. On display are those self-same razor sharp, shape shifting, sinuous rhythms as they shimmy like silverfish in starlight. Nimble nuggets that play with punctuation, split sentences into spectral verse that return to haunt you so that having put the Kindle down, you have to pick it up again and start over..
Bukowski in reflective mood perhaps or, and Russell makes mention of him, Ernest Hemingway romancing the Parisian walkways, taking in views, making notes then teasing them into poetry. Bringing co-opposites into sharp focus then examining the fragile psyche of humankind. Each life has a story suggests Russell and then goes on to prove the point.
I particularly enjoyed section 3. Old Age. That eventuality is creeping up on me in the way a Ferrari eats tarmac. Russell too is of a certain vintage and here he reveals with customary lack of sentiment those subtle shades of grey (no soft porn here only the harsh light of self-examination) and turns them every which way beneath his microscope.
1CRage, rage against the dying of the light. 1D You do it so well Russell that the effect is electrifying.
I strongly advise those who like their poetry with an adventurous spirit to read this. 1CDragon Scales and Fireflies 1D is as the title suggests a thing of pure unadulterated magic.I read it one sitting and am going back for more.
