Flynn Monroe tore himself free from the clutches of an army fighting for a cause he no longer believed in. It was not without a heavy cost. He would give his left foot for the peace and solitude of life on his home planet. Some men were not made for a quiet life. Duty to a friend pulls him into a conflict riddled mining town. The dusty planet too close to its star isn’t worth fighting to save… but lives are. With his brother in tow, Flynn soon realizes the corporation behind the attacks is connected to their family in ways that could spell his demise along with everyone on – or in – the planet.
Enemies of a Sort is a great introduction to the Flynn Monroe series! I’m not by nature a sci-fi reader, but I really enjoyed this. It shows an adept balance of world building, action, character and relationships—where each part flows integrally from the other. Great beginning. Can’t wait for the next story in the series.
I'm so glad this is part of a series! I'm already attached to the characters, and I got so caught up in the universe of the story that I frightened a co-worker or two (or five!) with my reactions to certain scenes. I can't wait to read the next one!
Fun book! This is a good novella that has a great story but is easily read in one or two longish sittings. I love a good space western and I like where the universe building is going with this series, I already have the other books lined up to read!
“Enemies of a Sort”, prequel to the 'Flynn Monroe' series, is a traditional Space Opera/Western (albeit on a small scale) Flynn is back on his home planet after fighting in a war that was ultimately lost. He's no sooner landed than he's off again - a friend persuades him to help a mining colony which is under attack. He helps, mostly violently. It's OK, but halfway through the number of strange errors got annoying:- “During their decent” “They left him with sine scraps of paper and his dignity.” “He’ll expect that and most likely have a hoard of men with him.” “any ship that wanted to get out of dodge was going to lift off” A little editing would have made all the difference. 2.5 Stars, raised to 3 Stars.
