Bounty hunting wasn't the safest or most lucrative of trades, but if you were any good at it, there were decent credits to be made. Jarred Archer's skillset, and unique abilities, had allowed him to do just that. It wasn't a glamorous life, but he wasn't interested in notoriety or prestige. He just wanted to make his own way. A man with no past, one he had given up on trying to reclaim, his priorities were for his own survival . . . and keeping his memories where they belonged. Buried in the dark recesses of his mind. Of course, in this universe, things didn't always go as planned.
Confronted with a choice, Jarred gives aid to a pair of refugees along with another strange being named Orna, who seems to have knowledge of him, his lost past and possibly his future, and he is pulled unwillingly into a conflict that will turn not only his own world upside down, but ultimately may decide the fate of every free being in the system.
With the tyrannical Sect Dominion hunting him now, bent on capturing Orna, Jarred will be forced to make another choice. To follow his instincts and walk away, or listen to his conscience and do what he knows is right, and in doing so, force himself to confront more than just his own mysterious origin. He will have to embark on a journey of self awakening and face a destiny he neither believes in, nor is ready to accept.
This one has everything I took for in a space opera -- there's a flawed hero, a rousing plotline, interesting character evolution and tons of varying aliens. Don,t be discouraged by the length, that's a good thing! Am looking forward to the sequel.
I completely enjoyed this book! All of the characters were so well done and the plot is wonderfully interesting.
This is a great space adventure story. It didn't have to be in space, but it is. I got so drawn into the story, I hate that the next book isn't out yet. Our heroes are all super interesting though some of them, reluctant. The action scenes are an excellent read and well depicted. I love the character interactions. There are some really great tensions and interplay among the good guys.
The only draw backs are 1) the editing and 2) too many POV characters. The story is sometimes told from an omniscient narrator and sometimes from first person POV, which is all well and good. But sometimes, you got dropped into a new someone's head for the first time halfway through and it was kinda disorienting. I prefer omniscient narration to being in a bunch of different characters' heads.
I truly hope the series doesn't die and that it works its way to a delightful conclusion.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review
The story just goes to show that there is good in everyone. That being said, the protagonist; one interstellar bounty hunter, just happens to help one distraught female and her brother and his life isn't the same anymore. He is constantly being shot at, chased by the ruling/authority, attacked by a mythical race of warriors, fighting what appears to be a God, and being killed at least twice. He is also guardian/caretaker of an alien being he knows nothing about. A very good and interesting read
