This is one of the most terrifying books I've read in a long time. Really? A book about a guy who was a ventriloquist and had a TV show for kids? Yes. Winchell was verbally abused by his mother so badly it nearly ruined his life, even after she'd died. The story of how Winchell not only spent every moment of his life trying to prove his worth to her is both gut-wrenching and fascinating. This is a hard book to find (interlibrary loan may be your best bet), but if you have any interest in the lives of popular entertainers - especially their darker sides - this book is essential (but often difficult) reading.

Probably best known as a puppeteer and TV star, the rest of his life was a series of ups and downs especially regarding his mother. But he was also an inventor and friends with Dr. Heimlich. He consulted with him about using hypnosis during surgery and worked on an artificial heart. He also experimented on electric cars and was the first to develop disposable razors among other things. Highly recommended and very interesting!
