When autism is diagnosed or suspected in young children, overwhelmed parents wonder where to turn and how to begin helping their child. Drs. Delmolino and Harris, experienced clinicians and ABA therapists, eliminate the confusion and guesswork by outlining the pivotal steps parents can take now to optimize learning and functioning for children age 5 and younger. The book - early indicators of ASD in children younger than 3 years - behaviors of 3 to 5 year olds with a confirmed diagnosis - research about effective treatments & teaching methods - strategies for boosting play, communication & self-help skills - support for the rest of the family Case studies and a review of evidence-based interventions and proven practices help parents prepare a strong foundation for their child's future development.
As a special education teacher, I found this book to be a simple resource for parents. It seems to be lacking critical information to help parents understand the neurological nature of Autism. I think this would be a good resource as long as it is paired with others. It was an easy afternoon read. It may give parents unrealistic expectations by praising a study that used 40 hour-weeks of ABA therapy. I can't imagine a child being subjected to a full work week of intense therapy at such a young age, and they would certainly drain their bank accounts paying for that much therapy.
This book, although the right size for a parent to borrow and look through, reads to much like a medical report. It also has the flavor of...maybe blame the parent for not noticing some of the missed milestones. This should not be the first or only book a parent refers to when questioning the development and possible diagnosis of autism. I did like the page or two on joint attachment.
