For two hundred years Georges Belleveau has walked the night feeding from the living. In that time he has seen much. The 19th and 20th Centuries with all their wonders and horrors have marched past him. Monsieur Belleveau has watched all of it, and continued past them.
As a result he’s discovered he does well writing and teaching history. It’s not something pulled from dull pages to be monotonously recounted to bored students.
This career has brought him to a small midwestern university to teach a few night classes about his favorite subject. When it’s done, he’ll move on, as he always does.
Georges couldn’t be more wrong.
While hunting for a meal one evening he meets Diane Patterson, a woman of rare beauty and intelligence. In spite of himself he is drawn to her, and she to him.
But Georges is a vampire and Diane is human, mortal. One thing that every night dweller learns is that humans can never discover the undead exist. It could mean the extinction of their kind.
This secrecy is a barrier that cannot be crossed, and if it is, will Georges and Diane’s love survive On The Far Side of Darkness?
Georges is a 200 year old vampire. He is not the usual sexy alpha vampire that I'm used to reading about, that have women swooning at their feet. No, Georges is more monster, his human side does appear occasionally but first and foremost his lives to survive to appease the monster that dwells inside him. He will do whatever needs to be done. He has an interest in history, an easy subject for him as he has lived through so much of it. He is the author of many well received books. He gains employment teaching a night class at university. This is where he meets Diane.
This is a collection of short stories that follow Georges in his travels in America and Paris. This is very well written, I really enjoyed reading these tales which do have a connection running through them. Each one has an eerie and atmospheric feel, I knew that Georges would not hesitate to do what he needed to, his ruthlessness towards his victims is quite scary. But his relationship with Diane brought out his softer side. A totally different vampire romance to what I usually read. But this is a real pager turner. ARC courtesy of NetGalley
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a fun read. The writing style was easy, the format made for a quick read, and there was a good amount of paranormal romance in there to keep me turning pages.
As opposed to my typical read, this book was set up as a series of novellas or shorter stories. While they did not always flow seamlessly between one and the next, they chronicled the present day life of Georges and Diane. Georges is a semi-famous historian/teacher who also just happens to be a vampire. This brand of vampire is somewhere between the sexy type and the scary type (don't worry, there's lots of sexy in this book). While acting as a visiting professor at a college, he meets Diane and immediately feels drawn to her. Diane is an archival specialist at the college, and was apparently mostly gay before meeting Georges. They hit it off, but, as is the case with most vampires (in this world), strange events abound. Some student drama causes Georges to make some tough choices to protect Diane.
The next few stories follow them on their journey to becoming the couple they probably should have been all along. There are ups and downs (and a lot of unusual events), but it was a lot of fun to watch them develop as a couple. As a side note, there were some things that readers might find not to their liking in here. F/F scenes were pretty common in the stories, as was questionable consent. I didn't feel like they detracted from the story, though. It's a dangerous (and sexy) world that Georges and Diane live in, so these stories reflect that. We get a good dose of HEA, which is a nice change from my typical reads.
If you're a vampire lover who is looking for a quick and easy read, check this one out. It found a way to make me excited about vampire romance books again.
Ok, this is a first one for me. It's the first time that even though I tried my best to read this book, I couldn't. For me, it was so wrong in so many levels, I couldn't cope with it. Maybe was the style, maybe it was just me. I feel frustrated because I don't like giving books bad reviews, but I feel even more frustrated for not being able to finish a book.
Tråkig och spretig, man fick inget djup i karraktärerna och det var för många händelselinjer som påbörjades men inte följdes upp och avslutades på ett bra sätt.
