First of all, express portion of this book is outdate as the express framework has remove middleware bundle. Secondly, this book is not intended for beginners that have no programming or computer science backgrounds. Generally the book is good as i see, it started slow by spending much time describing low level details and how node.js handles things (and most if them still valid given node js has been improve its library for 2 years when this book was published). I would recommend most of the chapter of this book for those interested in how node js function and want to be less depending on third party frameworks. this book gives your fundamental view of node.js.
