After reading the first chapter (or First House as Barrett astrologically names the divisions of her novel), I thought I knew how this book was going to end. I was wrong! The Lovomaniacs is a strange mix of Hollywood clichés, modernist literary techniques, and over-the-top plotting. Written in 1972, one of the plot strands foreshadows the emergence of a new Hollywood with lower budget, intelligent films aimed at a smaller, more discriminating adult audience, the Hollywood of The Conversation and Chinatown. This aesthetic informs the style of the novel as well as the author’s willingness to include scenes of extreme sordidness and to undercut at least some of the reader’s expectations. Much of the dialogue is funny in its vulgar excess and there is one scene with a surprising laugh out loud payoff.
My review is that this was a waste of time. It was not enjoyable to read. It was confusing beyond belief. I don't know what else to say except don't read it.
