It's a real shame, but I felt much of the poetry here was lost in translation.
There was excessively repeated use of the words 'coquettish' and 'tapster', and lots of missing articles/pronouns (e.g. "of Beloved"). The translator said at the outset that he sought to capture the meaning rather than the rhythm, but this only added to the awkwardness of the lines.
There were a few beautiful images and I can well imagine the original Persian poetry that was selected for this collection was truly sublime.
Interesting and intriguing glance into historical Persian literature.
The Garden of Persian Poetry: A Unique Collection of the Best Persian Poetry with Love, Spiritual, and Wisdom Themes: A Glance at 1000 years of Persian Literature, curated by S. Morteza Lajevardi is a beautiful anthology of short poems that gives a fantastic insight into the historical culture of Persia. The strong theme throughout this book is spirituality and monotheism, which may not be to everyone's pallet.
The beauty of poetry is that it transcends all cultures, time periods, and peoples. I felt the words of the ancient poets Amari, Tusi, and Ganjavi. Khusro was also very potent in my mind. This book will stay with you long after you have turned the last page.
I'm disappointed. I was hoping to find something here but the 65 poets (880AD to 2000AD) all felt rather similar to each other, whether it was through the translation or something else I'm not sure.
The editor chose to render them through their meanings rather than their rhythm so maybe this is the reason.
