Below is a part of my review I did on my blog.

"This book is for developers who wish to quickly learn and understand simple servicemix based solutions, like advertised. I can totally agree on this.

Before getting to the recipes, Henryk explains to whom he wrote his book, what you need to have ready in order to use his recipes and some reading conventions. He explains the two flavors of ServiceMix, the open source bundle or the distribution from FuseSource called FuseESB. His book will focus on the open source ServiceMix bundle.

Every recipe starts with a short introduction. This introduction consists of a few lines, not more than 10, probably less. Sometimes there is a section called “getting ready” where you will find all resources needed for this recipe. Following is the “how to do it” section, where the recipe describes a step by step solution / implementation to the reader with code snippets, path names and everything you need. Not too detailed on the reason why, because otherwise there would be nothing left to write in the “how it works” section.

The “how it works section” explains the “how to do it” section, but in a more detailed way. It also explains why certain configurations or decisions have been made, how to actually make the recipe work, and what you need to configure in any external systems. Last, but not least, you will find some more “under the hood” information in the “there’s more” part. Like explaining that the Apache ServiceMix actually is a customized version of Apache Karaf, with some other project additions.

There is no doubt that Henryk Konsek knows what he is writing about. His recipes add value to junior, intermediate, and possibly senior, software engineers. Mix together most of his recipes and you will find that you have a solid configuration, and understanding of how things work in-depth. The tips and tricks he learns us are valuable in order to quickly detect and resolve problems when you are dealing with a misconfiguration."

"Instant Apache ServiceMix How-to" by Henryk Konsek is a great and must read book for Apache ServiceMix beginners. It covers all the major topics, one needs to know about ServiceMix. This book helps to learn and practically develop ServiceMix solutions.

The most significant factor is that each recipe has "How to do it", "How it works" and "There's more" sections. "How to do it" provides all the instructions necessary to develop a solution. "How it works" describes those instructions in detail, how it really works and the reason why certain decisions are made. Finally "There's more" provides additional detail about the recipe.

This book fills the void of proper ServiceMix 4 tutorials because JBI is deprecated as of ServiceMix 4.
