In my still very modest collection of books on athletics, there is one volume whose grandiose title contrasts with its small size and modest edition. It is “The 100 Greatest Track & Field Battles of the 20th Century”. In just over a hundred pages, American journalist Jeff Hollobaugh compiles what he considers to be the hundred greatest “battles” in athletics throughout the 20th century. He explains his use of the term “battles” very well in the introduction. In his selection, he has opted for events in which the struggle for victory and the uncertainty of the result stood out more than the records achieved, although there are some in which all these circumstances occur simultaneously.

Like any list of this kind, it is eminently subjective. After all, there is nothing more futile than trying to objectively compare athletes and competitions from different eras, whatever the sport. Not to mention when they also participate in different disciplines, as is the case in athletics. To begin with, because competitions have almost nothing to do with races. And among the former, the distinction between jumps and throws is even more pronounced than the great diversity of the latter, where it is impossible to assess the fleeting sprints of the short speed events and the highly varied tactical and strategic factors that influence the middle-distance and long-distance events using the same parameters.

In any case, all of them are in the book. And it is interesting to turn the pages, one by one, to discover which ones Hollobaugh has chosen. He summarises them, one by one, with a brief description followed by the final classification of each event. And he does so in descending order, as is usual in works of this kind, starting with the one he ranks number 100. A race that perfectly fulfils all the characteristics that define a great “athletic battle”: an evenly matched fight to the finish and a magnificent record for the winner as a result of the battle. It is the close duel for victory between Hannes Kolehmainen and Jean Bouin in the Olympic 5000 metres in Stockholm.

A hundred pages later, as each competition occupies only one page, leaving you wanting a more in-depth analysis of many of them, you arrive at what the author considers to be number one.

The journey through all of them offers a very interesting overview of athletics in the twentieth century and makes this book a highly recommended source of reference and gateway to the exciting history of the king of sports.

Es ‘The 100 Greatest Track & Field Battles of the 20th Century’.

Some of the duels are interesting, some of them I didn't know about, and was glad to see. A few, luckily not too many, are for non-US citizens totally irrelevant, while some major duels are left out. But still interesting stuff in here for those interested in track and field history, of which there are few books dedicated to.

A page dedicated to each significant event, including top finishers and their times, rankings, and any records broken. Only a few paragraphs describe each race but that is all that is necessary to get the setting. A great quick read and refresher of many of the great track and field battles.
