Cora Howder didn’t know what she was in for when she adopted a second Chihuahua. Nor did she know that her trip to write a book while staying in a Bald Head Island beach house would set off a series of hair-raising, tail wagging events that could put her pooches in harm’s way. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves, aren’t we? Let’s begin at the beginning. Cora first adopted Bennett and then Lola. After a bit of jealousy and pretending to ignore Lola on the part of Bennett, the two join forces to become the formidable dog detective team of Chief Inspector Brown (Bennett) and his relatively fearless partner, Sergeant Starfoot (Lola). On Bald Head Island, they quickly become friends with the local population—Moc the Mockingbird and Jugular, aka Jug, the huge mongrel dog—before they stumble across a turtle egg trafficking racket. This is just the kind of case the pair of Chihuahuas are ready to take on. Joining forces with Moc, Jug, and Big Mama, a loggerhead turtle whose nest is in danger, the clever canines concoct a plan to foil the egg snatchers and save the day. However, while the mission is a success, Starfoot and Brown are washed out to sea—and then dognapped! It will be up to their intrepid friends to rescue them or they will never see Cora again. A raucous romp for children of all ages, Rhoda Canter’s hilarious adventure has more twists and turns than a jar full of licorice whips. Highlighting the importance of strong friendships and the need to create and support the feeling of community, she underlines the importance for kids to take a stand for the environment. Showing that even someone small can take on evil forces and prevail, The Adventures of Starfoot and Brown teaches kids that success often requires thinking creatively about what you can do, making a plan, and working together to see it through.
This book is about the adventures of two chihuahua dogs and other animals on the Bald Head Island. They are really cute especially their ways of talk and behavior. I loved the book.
The Adventures of Starfoot and Brown by Rhoda Canter is a children's fiction, one hundred and twenty eight page, third person, past tense, fiction novel. It also includes adorable pictures throughout the chapters. It is a great book for children just starting to read chapter books. The story is mostly between the interactions of the animals, which is perfect for young children. The characters are funny, the writing is lively and you could easily imagine the descriptions.
Coral Ann Howder `Cora" adopts two lovable Chihuahuas and takes them to Bald Head Island as she writes her book. Before long both dogs pick an alias and set off to solve a crime with a few of their new island animal friends. Bennett aka Chief Inspector Brown and Lola aka Sergeant Starfoot try to stop turtle traffickers, who are stealing and selling turtle eggs. The mishaps and funny dialogue are perfect for children to want to read over and over.
Since I won the second book in Goodreads, I thought to read the first one. It was a great read. I really like how the two Chihuahuas come to live with Cora, who is a writer. She adopts Bennett first and then Lola. Bennett is bossy and Lola is a goofball.
The dogs and Cora move to the island when there are loggerhead turtles laying eggs. The dogs meet a mocking bird and the bird tells them about the loggerhead turtles laying eggs and thieves taking them. Between the bird, the two dogs with the help of a third dog (who lived with the thieves), they help with the capture of the two men who are taking the eggs and young turtles.
This is a great book in that it does teach you about loggerhead turtles and their laying of eggs. And I do think that kids would love reading about the two cute Chihuahuas and the mockingbird.
Using animals in human roles is nothing new and it is a tried and true formula for children's books. The Adventures of Starfoot and Brown by Rhonda Canter is one of the best new children's books if this genre this season. If your child is just beginning to read chapter books this one is a great find. The book starts with a writer who adopts two Chihuahuas. She takes them with her when she goes to Bald Head Island. This is where she goes to write. This is where the fun begins, the dogs take on aliases and sets out to solve local crimes. They meet some of the local animals and engage in an attempt to stop turtle trafficking.
The writing in hilariously funny and kids will want to read it over and over again.Perfect for birthdays or a just because gift.
This great little read starts off with a teeny-tiny pup channelling messages to a little girl to pick her, pick her, pick her. And the little girl does and the adventure starts.
My daughter loves this story. It's a quick an easy read for her, and nothing too complicated for her to read on her own. It's got really good illustrations as well to help with the story telling. Chapters are short and well planned out in kid sized chunks. Fairly fast paced with some very lovable characters that leave a little girl wishing her dogs talked or were as cool as the ones in the story.
Great read, awesome price, don't miss out on this book for your little one.
Puppies who talk to each other, turtles, birds and more, what little boy or girl wouldn't love this story. It wraps up all the elements of a good children's book into one neat package. The pictures are bright and colorful, the animals very likable and the story line is easy to follow and sure to amuse children of all ages, whether they are reading this story themselves or you are the one reading the story to them. It also has a good life lesson about poachers and protecting animals around us. Great book overall, perfect for the little reader in your life.
Two Chihuahuas, Chief Inspector Brown (aka Bennett) and Sergeant Starfoot (aka Lola), work with Jud, a mongrel dog, Moc the mockingbird, and Big Mama, a loggerhead turtle, to stop Jug's criminal owners from snatching eggs and baby turtles. Follow along as they are dognapped, threatened by a hungry fox and washed out to sea as the Chi-Chi's try their paws at animal protection and arresting poachers, all while trying to find their way home to their beloved owner.
What a delightful book! I really enjoyed this book. The story about two chihuahuas working with other animals to save sea turtle eggs was very inventive and had plenty of exciting moments. It is geared towards kids over 8. I am so happy I won this book from Goodreads First Reads contest. I will be passing it along to my grandkids who I hope enjoy it as much as I did.
I entered the competition hoping to win this book for my old primary school libray.. All the kids at Wonga Beach State School loved this book so much :D
