One of the most evocative books ever written. Although she was the daughter of the squire, her love for the village that died for England is all encompassing. From the humblest hedger to her hero brother coming home from the Boer War she depicts a way of life that was almost gone in 1943 when the War Office requisitioned the whole village for D-Day practice. The book describes in great detail the inside of the big house, the farm, the church, main street and all the outlying tenancies. Superb, a rare 6-star book....
