Investigative Medium - the Awakening

Rate this book
Investigative Medium- the Awakening has mystery, murder, suspense, and a passionately romantic love story set in a time that history forgot.

This is the story of a completely ordinary wife and mother, who woke up one morning suddenly psychic. Who knew Laine Crosby, former marketing executive at The Weather Channel, had the gift of being an Investigative Medium? Not even Laine, that is, until she moved from Atlanta to the property of an eighteenth century Maryland plantation and woke up talking to a former slave buried in her backyard!

Investigative Medium - the Awakening, examines the gift that was thrust upon Laine who was at first surprised, and then upset, and over time and through experience, embracing of this new way of life. Laine’s husband, Chris, twins Annie and Caleb, and even her Jack Russell terrier “Steve” have peripheral ghostly involvement, so it is a family affair, although at first an unsettling one.

Along Laine’s journey, she meets an unlikely friend, the spirit of Jannette, once nanny to the children on the plantation where she lives. Laine becomes Jannette's voice, bringing her back from the antebellum South to tell the incredible story of her life as a slave, and a tender romance is revealed. Interwoven with Laine’s personal story, are the first hand accounts of former slaves Jannette and Bill, and others.

Laine finds similarities in her own life and Jannette's, and with Jannette's friendship, Laine begins her journey down a path of self discovery. Once Laine accepts her gift, it is her mother who, from beyond the grave, helps Laine find a way to surrender, and at long last give up on the life she dreamed of having, in order to have the life she was meant to live.

Investigative Medium - the Awakening is first in the Investigative Medium series, a preface to future books about Laine's adventures with law enforcement, historians and archaeologists. It is a fast read and an uplifting and hopeful book for anyone who has lost a loved one. But, put on your seat belts; It's a thriller along the way!

I enjoyed reading this book and recommend it highly. From the moment I started to read the book I couldn't stop reading and actually finished it in 2 nights. I was disappointed only by the fact that I finished it and there was no more to read. So, I will definitely be reading it again while I wait for her next book. As Laine Crosby is telling her story she makes you feel as though you are right there beside her experiencing it with her. It was an emotional roller coaster ride for me, I found myself smiling, laughing out loud and also in tears at some parts. It isn't just a story about a person discovering her physic gifts, to me it is a book that gives the reader hope for those who have lost someone and to know that their loved ones are not only okay but are still with us. She shares her personal story and she also shares some life stories from those who have contacted her from beyond. This is a special book and one that I think everyone should read. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.

What an amazing book! It made me shed a tear or two a few times, and gave me goosebumps a couple times too. It's so fascinating to read about Laine Crosby's experiences as she struggles to accept and understand her unique gift. To be completely honest, I'm not a firm believer in the paranormal, but this book definitely gave me new perspective. I will be on the look out for books to follow, and I firmly believe Laine will make a difference in many people's lives.

This is an awesome book! It is so interesting that I can't put it down. It is the first in a series and I look forward to reading all of them. I wouldn't be surprised to see a movie made from the book. It is better than any I have read. Laine is very brave and her husband Chris is very supportive and understanding. Caleb and Annie are darling. I loved the yellow balloon! A must read you won't be sorry!

Investigative Medium – the Awakening is an intriguing and thought provoking account of a life transformed. Laine's talent in writing gives readers a front row seat into her remarkable gift of mediumship and treats one to a journey between past and present. A journey she never intended for herself or her family, but ultimately accepted as both a gift and a mission from God so that she may assist, enlighten, and comfort both the living and dead.

The blending of Laine's life and the life of the slave girl, Jannette, is most intriguing, especially when one fully realizes that it was Jannette who literally relayed the story of her life to Laine – a story retold 150 years after Jannette’s death. Throughout the book, there are a myriad of individuals and events that keep one thoroughly engaged – some frightening, some hilarious, and others that leave you scratching your head in wonderment. This book is a definite must read!

I have had the pleasure of interviewing and working with Laine Crosby on several occasions over the years and I was only too excited to read her book. It is wonderfully written, intelligent, sympathetic and engaging. You learn not only about Laine's journey, but the voices of others across time who shared their stories with Laine and us. This book made me laugh, cry, smile and find comfort. I highly recommend it and can't wait to read her next one!

This was really engrossing! All about an investigative medium and how she came into her gift and how she uses it. She can see and hear things that most people can't (or won't). This book reminded me that our loved ones are never really that far from us. We just have to open our minds and ears.

Around the Year in 52 Books 2017 Reading Challenge. A dual time line.

Disjointed, perhaps in part due to the dual time line. I didn't know whether she answered the prime question or not. When/how did she first become psychic?

Interesting. She has some views I'd never considered, especially that spirits may remain earthbound not because they're stuck, but because they choose to remain here. The narrative is compelling, but without a strong structure. More "this happened and then this happened and then this..."

A good read, but I didn't totally feel the characters and the switching from past to present wasn't motivated.

The writing style did not capture me. I had a hard time following the switch between voices and past vs present.

A very different read for me as it deals with ghosts and 'time travel.' A riveting story that flows naturally interweaving between present and 1860ish Maryland.
