I really can’t say much good about this book. It’s a Bible study guide book designed to be used in a group. It’s put together by Community Bible Study. I spent $20 on it, and if it weren’t for the group I joined I would not have bought it.
Romans is a very tough and often polemical book at certain points. I’ve been studying Romans on and off for over 20 years and while this study guide does a relatively good job at avoiding most controversy, it falls short in other important ways.
For one, many of the questions don’t seem to fit the context of what is being studied. They are not clear and sometimes seem to confuse our entire group as to what is intended. At other points the entire chapter of questions have you pulling verses almost entirely out of other books in the Bible instead of focusing on the immediate text. The effect is that you haven’t really studied a chapter of Romans, you’ve just read someone else’s interpretations instead of doing your own work by studying the surrounding context.
My recommendation for someone considering this book is to read the book Growth Groups published by Matthias Media. Join or lead a group using that book, then use it to create your own study on the book of Romans. While it will take a lot more time and effort, Growth Groups will teach you some very solid study habits and have you creating questions for your group that will yield far better results than Engaging God’s Word: Romans does.
Another consideration for those using this book is that our leader has an older copy and after Romans 9, his questions were completely different than the rest of ours.
