I enjoyed reading this novel. The only reason i gave it 4 stars is because there were some parts that dragged on. Other then that it was a fast read for me.. Luca had all this money, power & respect yet still dumb when it came to the man she was in love with. Why did she love squirrel so much? The author didn't really get into details about their relationship other than sex so i don't know why she was so in love with... It's ironic how Luca became just like the people who hurt her... Naomi had me wanting to come in the book and smack her . Looking forward to part 2.

First in a series, Luca is perceived to be a mousy, not too bright girl toy for drug lord Nate. She is low-profile and passive in the beginning, but bright with technology. She’s getting her GED after her schooling was derailed by a rape and pregnancy. When Nate is murdered (she’s in the car at the time), she runs back to their apartment, grabs money, jewelry, cocaine, and a few clothes and hides out. From that point, she builds a crew of young women and a drug dominion. She hides behind the neighborhood’s perceptions of her and gains true power.

This was not my cup of tea, but readers of the genre will enjoy strong women, lots of action, sex, and violence so four stars for them. The texture and details of the story are well done and detailed. The plot becomes unwieldy at times and Luca’s motivations are sketchy, but readers will enjoy the pace and action. Recommended for fans of the genre.

Readalikes:
Melissa Scrivner Love’s Lola Vaquez novels; Joy King – Mafia Princess; Kim K. – Rise of an American Gangstress; Teri Woods – Dutch; Treasure Hernandez – Carl Weber’s Kingpins: The Girls of South Beach; A’zayler – Heart of the Hustle; JaQuavis – The Dopeman’s Wife; Saundra – Long Live the Queen; Brick – Hood Misfits.

Pace: Fast-paced
Character: Complex, but inconsistent; Strong women
Storyline: Own voices
Writing style: Gritty
Tone: Explicit; Menacing; Violent
Frame: Brooklyn; Contemporary
Themes: Ladies first; get money

Red flags/Trigger warning: Language; Explicit sex; Violence

Slow reading during the beginning.....
hated how Luca was treated...... she shouldn't let people treat her like that...... and some of the bs she did didn't make sense .... Why kill innocent people to hurt others what a bunch of bullsh*t...... she seemed like a smart dumb girl at the same time......i hate how everyone she came across done her wrong and she accepted it longer than needed....... too many shady characters in this book I don't know who the hell to like..... Luca & the girls she role with need deep counseling and a new environment....Luca's ways will be a downfall foreal..... the writer got some talent no doubt but prolonged alot of stuff I'm still undecided if I want to read the other(s).

This started off pretty good and then it started teetering around. I liked Luca's role in here but then I didn't, she was powerful but weak at the same time. I guess when you think you're in love, that's what happens cause Squirrel was playing her like a full brass orchestra! I wasn't crazy about her right-hand's role either but once they got things going, they were indeed on top. Sometimes it took long to get to the point, I found myself skipping alot of pages because I knew what was happening but yet the story was being drug out. Overall it was a good read and I look forward to reading how things turn out for Luca and her crew in part 2.
