As an Animal Science Major with a Pre-Veterinary emphasis in my Bachelor's Degree, my passion was reptiles. However, the more I became acquainted with the veterinary world (schools, classes, practices, generally accepted knowledge) the more it became apparent that very little was actually known about reptile care and husbandry. It is a general rule among reptile enthusiasts that breeders will know more practical applications of medicine regarding their reptiles than the average vet.

"Reptile Medicine and Surgery" by Douglas R. Mader, is the exception to that rule. By reading, and learning to understand this book, you guarantee that you already know more about caring for and curing your reptiles than your local vet (unless you are fortunate enough to live in a hotspot for reptile enthusiasts, such as New York, Florida, California or Tennessee, in which case you may be lucky enough to have a rare reptile specialist in your area).

Note: It should go without saying that understanding a surgical procedure does not make you qualified to perform it. If you have no reptile specialist in your area I recommend that you find a vet who is willing to work with you and learn. Suggest this book to them, and ask them to study up on your reptile's problem.

All reptile enthusiasts should own this book. All vets should too. 5 out of 5 for doing an excellent job at precisely what it was intended to.
