Dragons Shining

Rate this book
When angels give of their own blood, the threat must be dire and the need great. Herein lies a tale of a few born of Angel's blood, upon whom a great burden falls. From infancy to young adulthood, these few saviors will be hunted by the dark ones, led by the rebellious son of Satan. Minions of the Prince of Demons, these poor dark creatures have been stripped of their mortal souls, supplanted by the evil spirits of fallen sorcerers, warriors and vampires. All of the races on the world Cotera shall become embroiled in a terrible war.

Dragon's Shining begins Owen's epic journey from his years as farm boy and past his first fateful meeting with the Prince of Demons. Destined to become a Dragon Lord, or even the Dragon King, Owen slowly learns the price of power, what it means to have so many depend on him, and the possible consequence of failure. Along the way he meets Briana, who is foretold to be his one true love, and who will share his fate. Revelations at an early age turn their word upside down, as the great adventure begins.

Decided to read this book on a whim and ended up very pleased I found it.

The book is about this boy and thirteen others who are birthed with at least half dragon blood to become Dragon Lords because the angels (aka higher powers in heaven) see a darkness coming (evil stuff breaking out from hell) and want to raise champions (because they're not allowed to interfere themselves on the lower plane of existence) to fight it. They are all half dragon, with dwarf, human and elf as their other halfs, and can shapeshift into dragons at will. The Dragon King/Queen (who are the protagonists) of the other 12 Dragon Lords are slightly different, being 'Vampire' Dragons who instead of having a half mortal/half dragon heritage, have a half vampire goddess/half dragon heritage. The vampire side allows them to gain extra abilities like quick rejuvenation and ability to control blood in its physical form using it as a weapon against others (think Kate Daniels series) or extracting the life energy from it and redirecting at will.

They can also mix their blood with other animals/beings to make them stronger in various aspects (like making a new vampire as it is in vampire novels). For instance when the protagonist (Owen is his name btw) mixes his blood with his horse, his horse takes on lizard/dragon/unicorn aspects and becomes stronger, more intelligent and has some cool abilities like force shields and can shoot energy missiles at his enemies by pointing his unicorn horn/cannon at them. It is also hinted that his horse will take on the ability to shapeshift in the future because of the protagonist's bond with it as his familiar.

There are a few typos and editorial problems, like for a couple paragraphs, the protagonist changes names (guessing the author decided to change the protagonists name and missed it in a few areas during the revisions), but editorial problems rarely bother me since I usually understand the story just fine from the context.

The thought process and personality of the protagonist seems extremely, even unrealistically mature for a 15 year old. At first it was bothering me, but as I continued reading I began to accept it and not mind it because he wasn't a human. He was part elf, part dragon and part god, sired by a goddess and another higher being (who hasn't been revealed yet) and had no human DNA in him. So by HUMAN standards, he was way too mature, but for his 'higher being' standards, which I have nothing to compare it to, it was fine.

This is not urban fantasy. This is more like medevial times with swords, bows and arrows, knights, kings etc. Although its not completely accurate because there seems to be more modern things like cafeterias, general stores and sport teams (like a polo game played mounted on a horse with sticks and rings) and other various things that aren't commonly seen in this era/genre of book.

I hope the author decides to continue the series (and soon!!! I am eager to read the next book). I can't find him on goodreads and he doesn't appear to have a blog/facebook/website I can find to hear updates.
