There. That’s the compulsory smart-ass writer bio that everyone seems to have in their arsenal these days. Someday I’ll figure out why these evasive and cryptic statements have become so popular. If I had to dig down into the dark depths of my seldom-used psych degree to search for an answer, I’d guess that we keep it vague because writers like to keep readers at arm’s length. Tell them something intriguing, but not personal, right? Because God forbid we get personal. Follow up this tell-little, confess-less quip with a quick list of publication credits and ‘poof!’ I’ve got myself a bio.
But since you’ve clearly stumbled into my shadowy little corner of the internet, perhaps you’re entitled to a bit more information in return for your bravery. So here goes…
I write fiction, poetry, and drama because those have been the driving forces of my emotional life. I find solace in poetry, sense in drama, and escape in fiction. I read simply in order to survive a world that I find increasingly perplexing. I write in the hopes to add to the discourse that seeks to solve the puzzles. So that’s what I do. I read, I write, and repeat.
I also edit. In 2011, I founded Crack the Spine Literary Magazine because I discovered that when it comes to the lit world, I have precisely one talent. I’m not the best writer… not by any stretch. I’m not the most concise reviewer or the flawless proofreader. What I am, the one thing I can do, is identify what people want to read, and more often than not, what people need to read. So that’s how CTS started. A forum to find and publish poetry, fiction, and essays that were necessary. To give a home to lost words. This project has become my life’s work and my constant obsession.
