Amanda Stones is a new author for me. I am impressed with this story. First, there is Athena who was left penniless when her father died. He was a member of the nobility but his family was disgraced by his loss of fortune. Instead of participating in her debut, Athena became a companion. There is, of course, a young doctor that is trying to start a clinic for the poor, where people can get excellent care. He has a secret. Both Athena and Piers know they cannot fall in love. She, because she is employed. Whereas Piers does not want to advertise his identity. Both of the main characters are good people trying to be true to their families and their careers. Some of the secondary characters were memorable. The action was slow but fit the story. I give it 5 stars.
This is so dumb! There are so many mistakes. Totally illogical.
The doctor is in the coach returning to the ball, so deep in thought, he almost forgets to turn.... He isn't steering the coach, he's inside. The coachman knows the way since they are returning the coach!
Lance wanting to find out more about Amelia from Edwards. He does not give Edwards her surname, but Edwards immediately knows which Amelia Lance wants to know about amongst all of London's Amelias.
So many people do not make sense. So badly written. What has the editor been doing?
I couldn't bring myself to finish it Feeling too guilty about wasting my time!
I did not finish this book. There were so many errors in context as well as time line failure. The author seems unaware of the fact that there was a very distinct difference in the language of the high born to that of the low born. The servants in this book spoke with the same vocabulary as did the members of the Earls family. The plot was very good, and I would have enjoyed the premise of a smart female who dabbled in engineering a whole lot more if the proof readers and editors had done a better job.
Interesting storyline. Unfortunately, the book read like an outline. The chronology was frequently difficult to follow, especially when bouncing among the secondary characters. There was an obvious lack of quality editing. Development of the primary characters was shallow, and the stilted conversation only tended to reinforce their lack of depth. The multiple other couples appeared to be more of a distraction, and their story would be better told in their own book.
A great story from a talent author. I am quickly becoming a fan of this author. This is the second book I have read of hers and I found it both charming and very well written. She had done her all characters in a brilliant manner. This story was so sweet about a doctor (and a lord) and a young woman who see herself as just an average lady nothing special. This is a gem of a tale and one I am so very happy to recommend!
I only got to chapter 4 so cannot say if it is clean or not. As said I stopped during chapter 4. It was not for me. It felt a bit stilted, nothing inspired me. Unusually for me I just could not persevere, which is a shame as the ‘blurb’ had promise and I was looking forward to a storyline that was different to most. Sorry.
The basic premise of the story is good, but it does not have the feel of a well thought out story. Too many flowery words. Too many words in general. I often found myself skimming forward to get the plot moving. I read the book to the end, but it got a bit boring at times. Also, lots of historical inaccuracies.
Not a good book. The characters are all weak and boring. A woman interested in science should have some backbone. A doctor some grit. Instead there were pages upon pages of feelings and feelings. It was a boring read.
