Deeksha by Narendra Kohli- Narendra Kohli is an author who books in Hindi on the epic Ramayana in modern context are popular. Deeksha depicts the struggle of Maharashi Vishwamitra who has a gurukul and hermitage in forest area where he engages in teaching and tapasya. In his time two class of people lived first –Dev & humans and second –Rakashas. Guru of Devtas is Brihaspati and that of Rakshasas is Shuracharya. By his tapasya, whatever weapons have been given to Shukracharya, he has taught their use and has given to demons/Rakshasas. The divine weapons have been bestowed by Gods on Vishwamitra. The Rakashas wish that Vishwamitra should train the Rakshasas and also give them the divine weapons so that they can rule without further fear of opposition. In the Book, the mental struggle of Vishwamitra has been depicted. Either he should provide the destructive divine weapons to Rakashas or to close the Ashram and perish by their daily threats. Vishwamitra decides to meet the King of Ayodhya, Dashrath where he would meet Rishi Vashista and could find a solution. He has heard that Rishi Vishwamitra has trained four sons of King Dashrath in weaponry and warfare. He walks to Ayodhya from his ashram with a few of his desciples. After crossing the river Sarayu, the group bathes at the ghat. King Dashrath comes to know that the great sage has come to Ayodhya and he with Brahmins of Ayodhya and his ministers welcome him and bring him to the palace. Here the group is served food and asked to rest. He is invited to the Court room where he meets Rishi Vashist, King Dashrath and other court ministers. Vishwamitra sees the four children of Dashratha and on first look is impressed by them. Vishwamitra informs the king about the threats he is receiving from demon groups for life the ashram residents and property. The King discusses the strategy for this purpose. Vishwamitra demands that the King send his elder son Ram and his younger son Lakshaman with him to the forest for the safety of the ashram and the destruction of the demons. King Dashrath does not wish to accept his wish but on the advice of Rishi Vashisth, he agrees to send his sons. The two children take consent of their mothers and join the Rishi and his group for their Ashram in the forest. On the way, the group is attacked by a lady demon named Tadaka. Ram aims an arrow on his bow and is able to kill her in one single shot. Vishwamtira is impressed with the education in weaponry and war provided by Rishi Vashisth to these young men. After the death of Tadaka, there is not much fear of a counter attack, so the group stays in the forest and for rest in the night. The morning, Vishwamitra imparts his knowledge and use of divine weaponry to Ram and Lakshaman. Thus Vishwamitra is the preceptor of Rama. He trains them in advanced religion also. The group reaches the Ashram and next day Vishwamitra begins his yagna. After observing for some time, a group of demons attack the place of yagna with throw dirt, water etc so as to distract Vishwamitra and make the articles used in yagna impure. The leader of demons is Marichi and his brother Subahu and their army. Ram aims an arrow which makes Marichi run for his life away from the ashram. Lakshman fires a fire arm arrow which burns Subahu and his army to death. Thus Vishwamitra is able to complete his yagna and is satisfied that divine weapons are in safe hands and when ever necessary, shall be used for good of humans and devatas. Next the group moves towards Janakpur where King Janak has organised a swayamvar for his daughter Janaki. On the way the group comes across Ahalya Ashram which is deserted. Vishwamitra inform Ram that this is the hermitage of Rishi Gautam whose wife Ahalya was seduced by Indra who appeared in the form of Rishi Gautam and for this incident, Rishi Gautam cursed both of them. The book depicts that finding women weak, the male society has done much wrongs against them. By his kindness on Ahalya, Rama makes her acceptable to society. With the blessings of Vishwamitra, Ram is able to string the Pinaka bow of Lord Shiva and marry Sita. The script of the book binds the reader to finish reading the book in one sitting. It should be translated in all Indian and foreign languages so that the modern Indian epic is available to Indian and International readers. It is a must read book for all.

The book Diksha by Narendra Kohli and 6 more books in the series upto Yuddha deliberate Ramkatha in modern perspective so that the reader finds Ram near to his own personality, not as a super human or God like personality. This induces the reader to inculcate in himself the qualities of Ram by bringing down Ram at the level of the reader.
