"When the nightmares yawn beneath her feet, the scariest part is letting go. "
Dr. Carrie Farrow has dedicated her life to finding justice for the dead, but not without a steep cost. Years spent seeing the worst of humanity have left her determined to keep the living at a distance. It s the only way she knows to keep her heart safe.
A dig in Rwanda changes everything. When she returns, her sexy neighbor s concern and care slip past her iron defenses and she finds comfort in a night of passion. But not the whole night. Before the sheets have cooled, she s out of there.
David Cameron has walked a fine line, being there for her without pushing the bounds of their friendship. When she falls into his arms, he believes the years of loving her from afar are over until she makes it clear one night is all he gets.
Knowing one night will never be enough, David sets out to show her life is worth living, and love is worth claiming if she s brave enough to choose him.
And he s brave enough to open his heart wide enough to catch hers.
Warning: Contains a strong, independent woman who discovers a love worth risking her heart for; a sexy psychologist with secrets of his own; and sex so good it can heal the soul. "
Skylar Kade, self-avowed hedonist and princess extraordinaire, started her writing career after throwing aside yet another romance she could not bring herself to finish. The run-on sentences! The purple prose! Oh, the horror of it was just too much. So she sat down to write her own tale. Her favorite part about writing is the extensive research.
She currently resides in sunny southern California, alternately cursing the polluted air and adoring the often-perfect weather. Skylar spends her time asking the cabana boys to bring her more mimosas and feed her strawberries while she dreams up her next naughty adventure.
As she is permanently attached to the Internet (they are looking into surgical procedures to fix her crackberryitis), she would love to hear from you! Catch Skylar on the Nine Naughty Novelists blog, send an email to skylarkade@gmail.com, or visit her on facebook or twitter (@skylarkade).
Forensic anthropologist Carrie Farrow was used to seeing horrific scenes and sifting through gut-wrenching details. At least she thought she was, until her most recent case had her handling a mass grave of children in Rwanda. The things she witnessed while she worked the case brought her own heartbreaking memories to the surface, and as they melded together in her mind she was slowly beginning to lose her famous infallible composure. Little did Carrie know that David, the one man she could always count on to distract her and be there when she needed him, was ready and willing to do that and much more for her.
I loved the dual points of view for this story; it’s not always needed, but I think it was important in this case. Even if David weren’t a psychologist and Carrie an anthropologist, there was such a strong thread of pain and healing throughout both sides of the story that it was really necessary to see through both of their thoughts. Both David and Carrie had been through tragic events that had reshaped their lives, and neither of them had really worked all the way through it. David was hell-bent on getting through Carrie’s tough outer shell to make her see she needed him and needed support, but in doing this he was revealing to her how much he needed the same. It was sweet how they both helped heal each other even though it was a bumpy and painful road.
Skylar Kade did a wonderful job of making the tender moments between Carrie and David both emotional and seriously steamy! I never would have thought sex could be this therapeutic, but I tell ya there was all kinds of “physical therapy” going on that brought these characters both relief and release!! Okay, that was corny, but completely true!!
This was a great story of redemption and healing, and I look forward to seeing more from Skylar Kade in the future!
Quotes:
“It’s good to have you home.” The citrus scent that always evoked images of her wafted up from her hair. David had taken to eating a lot of tangerines in the six months since Carrie moved into the condo across from his. ~ Loc 15
He would have stopped her if his brain hadn’t short-circuited. Maybe he’d fallen asleep on the couch, or had an aneurysm and was on the brink of death. Anything but reality would explain this. She cupped his growing erection and his hand pressed against hers as he pivoted to face her. ~ Loc 81
“You take advantage of me, throw me the cold shoulder, melt into my arms, twist me up like a rag doll, and make me burn for you so hot I’m pretty sure my brain is melting. You. Owe. Me. A. Kiss. I dare you.” ~ Loc 811
Carrie watched the proceedings with tunnel vision, her insides a war between anticipation and growing awareness that their friendship might very well forge past her line in the sand. ~ Loc 1728
Emotionally gripping yet undeniably sexy A Love Worth Living by Skylar Kade took me by complete surprise. While I expected a somewhat more serious romance after reading the publisher’s blurb, I didn’t expect two extremely damaged characters one fighting to keep her sanity and the other trying to save the woman he’s realized he’s in love with.
Carrie Farrow takes her job as a forensic anthropologist very seriously often ignoring her life and health to get the answers for the victim’s and closure for their families. Dr. David Cameron who works as the company’s psychologist has a vested interest in Carrie as a co-work, neighbor, and someone who wants more. When she returns from a dig in Rwanda, he fears that she’s headed down a dangerous path, one he ignored years before in his brother and he vows to not make the same mistake twice.
Carrie is one of those heroines who is extremely strong but a complete mess. Honestly, David was quite warranted in his worry for her and one of those heroes that goes above and beyond. While Carrie likes David as a neighbor and friend she doesn’t respect his occupation, she has her reasons and they are fairly valid. However, David decides that he wants her so he finds ways of inserting himself into her life. I like that he calls her on her crap when she treats him poorly and that he knows when to push and when to back off. She’s not a pushover and when David is slow to share his prior hurts Carrie pushes him right back.
Carrie and David’s journey is a difficult one and happiness isn’t achieved easily, this isn’t a light and fluffy read. This is a highly emotional story and one that will more than likely have you running a gambit of emotions. Although heavier than most romance novels, A Love Worth Living is well worth reading. Ms. Kade has written a very complex tale with deep characters, an impressive plot, thought provoking dialog, with enough hot and steamy sex to satisfy anyone.
I had the honor of beta reading (for the first time ever) this story in its very early stages and holy cow, this end result has more depth and a more meaningful and gripping backstory than I could ever imagine. A Love Worth Living by author Skylar Kade is not your ordinary light, sexy, romantic love story. It is truly an intense, emotional, heartbreaking story of a woman who has to overcome a past tragedy and try to live in the present and hopefully, find love again.
David Cameron is the perfect guy to help Carrie Farrow learn to live and love again though he surely had his work cut out for him. I have to admit he was a "saint" in my eyes with all the angst that Carrie brought to their relationship. David also suffered from personal loss as well and knew the signs to look for in order to help Carrie not lose herself in depression and post-traumatic stress syndrome. I liked that he knew her so well regardless of how short a time they knew each other and he was able to get her to relax and enjoy small moments.
Carrie was a really "guarded" heroine who I have to admit was not very likeable at first. She was too stubborn and independent for her own good and a workaholic who didn't know when to stop and enjoy life. Slowly, David was able to chip away at the wall she built around her heart and finally open up to loving him. The sex scenes between them were good and you could feel their connection as their relationship developed.
Overall, I enjoyed this story and loved how committed the hero was in saving his woman and finding love together.
