Gerda does a fabulous job of highlighting a variety of Canadian women. Her art is beautiful, the layout is smart, and I’m so glad she made the book as large as she did to give space for the art to breathe. I think my favourite part of the whole book was seeing how each woman described themselves; many of them took pride in being a mother, a daughter, a partner. Others wouldn’t use a single word that included their occupation because that’s not how they define themselves.
I loved how Gerda moved between literal locations to abstract backgrounds. It was clearly a collaborative effort between how the subjects wanted to be seen and how Gerda painted.
An inspiring book, as a young woman. Bravo, Gerda!
