A bilingual collection of comics and drawings by prisoners-of-war, both British and Polish, during the Second World War. Published by Centralne Muzeum Jeńców Wojennych w Łambinowicach-Opolu, a museum in South-West Poland that focusses on POW camps.
An amazing collection. I picked it up from the museum in Opole. The larger section was closed, but they had some connecting rooms with the artwork and photos dotted about. As that was also closing, I bought the book and took it home. I'd dipped into it previously but this was the first time I've read it all the way through.
It's written in both Polish and English. Most of the pictures are translated and there only a few errors in the text, but it remains perfectly understandable.
The information and pictures are incredible. It was surprising to read that there was a big difference in the treatment of the British and Polish officers. The tone of the pictures is generally positive, wryly humorous drawings and people smiling in photos. They make the best of many situations.... in the Officer camps. The other camps are mentioned, but there are few drawings or photos from them mainly due to the conditions. It maintains a level tone that is overall hopeful, reflecting the attitudes of the soldiers.
