For Cole Treyfair, the first twenty years of his life were fairly normal. However, after a series of unexplainable occurrences, Cole discovers that he isn’t normal by any definition. After the tragic death of his Uncle Eric, Cole is called home to Arizona by the only family he has left, but there won't be any chance to mourn. Cole is quickly thrown into a life of not-so-mythological gods and plots to end the world. To prevent the world from ending, Cole must protect his younger sister Chezarei from various gods that wish to build the world anew; all while learning to control his newfound power, and guarding a secret that will lead to his death if anyone learns of it. Will Cole be able to stay alive, and keep Chezarei safe?
That Which is Unexpected is a humorous contemporary fantasy with a bit of romance, and is the first book in The Gods’ Executioner series by A.L. Bridges.
*Due to sexual content and humor, as well as some graphic violence, this book is not recommended for those under the age of 14*
A.L. Bridges was born and raised in Washington state, but currently resides in Arizona. He started writing as a distraction from the chronic pain that he has been experiencing for three years. Despite the fact that writing doesn't really help his pain, he continues to write with the hope that he may provide a distraction for those who may really need it, and entertainment to all the rest. He is currently attending a university in Arizona and is writing whenever he finds the time.

The title promises a thrilling romp through the realms of fantasy and comedy. Everything is normal in Cole Treyfair's life until a chain of weird occurrences, followed by a family tragedy that throws him into the secret existence of hardly mythological gods. The stakes are astronomical, with Cole protecting his sister from deities hell-bent on ending the world, all the while learning the ropes of his new powers and keeping a deadly secret under wraps. It speeds along full-throttle with loads of laughs, some romance, and graphic action that will keep you right on your toes! A great entry into a supernatural fight with very intense personal stakes for readers.
Honestly, the story is good...just not the writing. I love the plot and the concept and all the characters and everything, but it honestly reads like a fanfiction you'd find on Quotev. That's not really a bad thing though, it just means that the author just has more room to improve. It's just the way this book was narrated, some very unnecessary dialogue and thoughts, and very immature jokes (as in the sense that a 14 year old dude bro would make them rather than what you'd expect) that make the writing not very good. Also the sort of incest part is pretty creepy, no matter if they're "technically not related". I really do like the story though, and I'll probably read the rest of the books in the series, I'm just not really happy with the writing.
The combination of a young man discovering his true identity, and the mesh of different mythologies sets the stage for success for That Which is Unexpected.
It's almost hard to tell this is Bridges' first work, and by the end you'll be ready for round 2.

I started reading this book one night when I could not sleep. The description sounded interesting but it was not for me. Everything from bad writing, poor grammar, to insanely variants in chapter length threw me off. Nothing made sense half the time and then when something was finally explained it did not seem to be explained that well. I will not be reading more books in this series.
It wasn't half bad confusing every now and again but still an enjoyable reading experience. I really wish though the main character was more creative... he can create almost anything with his blood.
