Deep in the Swedish woods, messages and marks from long ago Swedish artist Elina Birkehag (born 1989) searched for trees with messages inscribed on their trunks by female shepherds from the 17th to early 20th centuries, and then photographed these “living archives.” Her book connects us with the shepherds and enables us to “read” the trees.
