Two things I love to do the most include graphic design and writing. I was an editor at a publishing company for several years; I saw the graphic designers at work and thought, ‘I’d like to do that.’ So I went to art school.
I love to read, write and draw. Yes, I am a creative nerd type. I like to read all kinds of books, but science fiction and fantasy is my guilty pleasure.
Winnifred Witch longs to make friends with the other children in her neighborhood in this miniature picture-book from 1997, but is prevented by the shenanigans of her malicious sisters, Sassy and Fussy. When Halloween comes around, she thinks her chance has come, only to discover that the gross punch created by her sisters has turned all of the trick-or-treaters against all three little witches. Then Winnifred discovers a recipe for Happy Brew in her Grannie's cookbook, and decides to repair the damage done by her sisters...
A cute little book - around 3x3 inches, I would say - A Special Witches' Brew was published in 1997 as part of Landoll Publishing's Little Landoll Halloween collection, which also included such titles as Halloween Be-Yourself Party, The Just Right Pumpkin and The Boo-o-o-ville Ghost School. It's a little text-heavy for a picture-book - each two-page spread has a paragraph or two of text on the left-hand page, and a full-page illustration in color on the right - and is really more of an illustrated short story than anything else. Andy Rector's narrative is (as mentioned) cute, as is the artwork from Norma Garris, but overall this was a little too sweet for me. If half stars were available, this would be getting a 2.5 star rating, but as they're not, I've rounded up in honor of the season, and my general fondness for witchy tales. Tastes vary of course, so young readers looking for witchy Halloween fare on the gentler side might want to give this one a look, should they happen across a copy.
Halloween is my absolute favorite holiday well next to cinco de mayo. I love the pictures and felt very sorry for Winnifred then happy cause she got her happy ending. Not all witches are mean ya know!
