Talk about the worst first date ever! Lara lets her friend Carrie talk her into a blind date, only it turns out the handsome stranger waiting for Lara after work isn’t Carrie’s cousin after all. And, when they’re chased through a portal to another world, Lara realizes Rhys really is out of this world.

Rhys believes Lara’s alternate in his dimension, Lyra, has left clues in her subconscious to the whereabouts of the Book of Secrets which explains the mystery of time travel. Power-hungry telepaths pursuing them will stop at nothing to get it, even if it means breaking Lara’s mind. To complicate matters, Lara gets tangled up in her feelings for Rhys while exploring her connection with Lyra.

With Rhys as her guardian, a bear of a man named Azle to guide her, and the spirit of Lyra haunting her dreams, Lara must find the Book of Secrets before it falls into the hands of those who want its power. Only then can she return to her world safely.

Some blind dates start out bad and get worse. Mistaking the stranger in the apartment lobby for a fix-up, Lara is draw into a wild adventure. Rhys isn’t a date, but a guardian from an alternate universe drawn into her world on the hunt for a lost telepath named Lyra, a girl he was supposed to protect. A book was discovered that held the secrets to portal travel, but Lyra and the book disappeared. Did she use a portal to plant information about the book in Lara first? Rhys isn’t the only one who wants to know, another traveler named Rund wants the information in Lara’s mind for himself.

Rhys and Lara start out with a testy relationship that soon grows to a budding attraction. But is it really Lara he wants or is it her resemblance to Lyra that draws him. And what happens if the real Lyra shows up? Will the search reveal a secret “too dangerous to possess?”

The story has a plucky heroine, stalwart hero and is full of action scenes as others join the chase for the book for their own purposes. There’s also a nice bit of world building as Lara and Rhys travel through the portals in their search and run into vampyr, mystic weapons and assorted dangers on the trail.

If you like fantasy novels that don't waste a second getting started, this just may be your cup of tea. In My Own Shadow revved up on the second page and took off at sixty miles per hour. The multi-dimensional aspects of this story were truly enjoyable. Though the heart of the story is romance, it was the adventure of transversing new terrains that really had my interest. A great story.

Content warning: Mild battle violence.

Susan draws the reader into this strange and different world. Through the main character Lara, the reader learns about this new world. This story has moments of conflict, mystery, and, of course, young romance. Thanks, Susan for a great read.

Susan took me on a journey through an incredible world. Her vivid descriptions really let me see and discover this strange new place with Lara. A bit of mystery and romance wound through the tale as well, although I could have used a bit more development on the romance.
