From a friend. I would do this study again sometime, years from now, and I bet my answers would change as to what it seems like God is telling me at that point in time, since the questions were so open-ended.

Very thought-provoking, as to how to interact with scripture, prayer, circumstance, and the church to absorb the messages that God is telling us.

Our youth pastor recently did a series on this topic and this exact same four things, although I don't know if he got them from this book or not. He had a lot of good thoughts on them, too, with different Bible references, and now they're kind of merging in my mind.

I liked that this book talked about the different things that can hinder prayer, such as

"If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear." - Psalms 66:18

The other things listed were relationships, ritual, and disobedience. (I would've equated disobedience with sin, but that's nitpicking on my part and maybe there is a difference.)

I liked that the book mentioned that just because a door is open doesn't mean that God intends for us to walk through it. It still takes discernment and prayer. Reading circumstance isn't always that straightforward.

Good open-ended questions that it would've been good to discuss with a group and hear their stories, but I won't put my answers here, as they had more to do with me and less to do with this particular book.

Favorite quotes:

"At times we do not hear word from God because we want Him to speak to us about our plans and purposes."

"Set your hearts on all the words which I testify among you today, which you shall command your children to be careful to observe - all the words of this law. For it is NOT A FUTILE thing for you, because it is your life." - Deuteronomy 32:46-47, emphasis mine

"When God knows He must judge a people, He looks for a person who is intimate with Him in prayer. Why? So He can show mercy to others as the person prays and intercedes. How tragic when God looks in vain for someone to intercede with Him (read Ezek. 22:30-32.)"

"Sometimes You can be so delighted with what you receive that you fail to recognize that God has communicated with you."

"Could your prayers be unanswered because after one attempt at reconciliation you assumed the problem was now the other person's and you began to try to relate to God as if everything was now all right?"

"If barriers such as envy, anger, or not being able to forgive develop, you and your church will be hindered from hearing God's voice."

"I would always challenge them that the pastor alone could not bring them to Christlikeness. It is important that you be closely linked with a church body. Without those dear people, there will be much of Christ that you may not experience."

I've actually done this study twice now: once, years ago, with a Southern Baptist Church (so long ago I can't even guess at the year--probably 2014 or so) and again recently. I think I got more out of it during the group discussions--though there were some thoughts that I jotted down in a journal.

The study looks at ways God speaks to people: through the Holy Spirit; through the Bible; through prayer; through circumstances, and through the church.

The study discusses ways to listen for, recognize, and respond to God's voice.
