A mysterious stranger appears in Corpus Christi, Texas as a Category-5 hurricane rolls in off the coast. As families make an attempt to prepare for the worst, they have no idea that they have front-row seats to the beginning of the Apocalypse.
The Four Horsemen have come down to end it all.
The stranger is looking for a young-boy named Caleb Hodes, a boy that might be the key to stopping the world from ending.
But how do you save the world when God is the one trying to destroy it?
The Ending by Mikey Neumann (The Returners, Borderlands) is an epic for a savvier generation of readers. The novel will be released in early 2013 with an exclusive multi-chapter preview on “BOZ.” Publishing.
Points for vividly drawn and empathetically engaging characters. Negative points for being pretty derivative, for publishing a book that wasn't actually finished, and for barely having a plot.
Excellent book. I came upon this book as a free download, after a short journey started here on Goodreads. After reading a blog post by Wil Wheaton, I searched out more about this author. I found the free download along with multiple positive reviews of his various works. I figured it was free, so why not? I am so glad I did!
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse have come to start the end of the world, but there is apparently one person who could stand in their way: a boy named Caleb. Sent to kill Caleb so that events may proceed is Archangel Gabriel. However, another entity is there trying to save Caleb: a man named Lucas (who we all call Satan, Devil or Lucider).
This first installment has excellent characterization. The way the characters are introduced keep you wondering who is there to help and hurt. As you move through the plot, their motives and roles seem to shift, but it's not due ti a flaw if fickleness. It is actually this author challenging long held beliefs, making you think and question your own ideas about the roles you traditionally cast for some of these characters. The growth of Satan is also very interesting and unexpected.
I did find a few small quibbles. The book could have used some additional editing, as I found several misspellings or misuse of words. Although there were only a few, it was still quite disconcerting. I also found a couple of small inconsistencies - likely a result of the author edit process. These would have been caught by a third party editor.
All in all, this was an excellent read and I can't wait for the next installment. Even better, I am willing to pay for it.
You are thrown into the middle of all the action. It was great and all, but I feel like you cannot squish all of this into a tiny <200 pages book. The author does not waste pages on describing the atmosphere or the characters.
It is short and to the point.
On the other hand I understand why the author would want to use a style like this. During an apocalypse there would be no time for introductions. The way people accepted each others deaths made me slightly squeamish, this is probably due to the lack of description or the way the author didn't want to go the sappy route. All of this made the book lacked emotion and made into a light read.
It's pretty good, but the beginning is a little clumsy and it name-drops another of the author's books. It didn't bother me too much, but I felt like I had to downgrade the rating by 1 for that. Will still read any more parts the author publishes.
Finished in about 2 hours over a single drink in a Starbucks so it's not a huge time-commitment, but if you can't tell by the title, it's not the complete story.
I just recently learned of the magnificent writing of Mr. Neumann when I acquired The Returners for free and since then I have been thoroughly sucked into Mikey's Universe as with The Returners his new book 'The Ending' is masterfully written. I hope that he keeps writing because I'll keep reading everything he puts out. Excellent work Mr. Neumann.
First time reading this author. Found out about the free offering on twitter. Great book really looking forward to the next instalment. The story was fast paced but gave plenty of character detail. Great 1st instalment!
NO SPOILERS--Excellent! Mikey is adept at turning a phrase. I'd include some choice examples but I don't want to ruin it for anyone. This is a quick read--definitely worth your time.
