T.C. Spellen the 2014 winner of the Henri Christian Literary Award in the Devotional Category for her first book, The Waiting Room, a 31-day Devotional for Single Women Waiting for the Right Husband. She is passionate about leading single women, who desire a mate, to live a purpose-filled life by engaging spiritual and practical disciplines. TC knows the importance of having a relationship with God whether single or not and takes great pleasure in sharing this pearl of wisdom with other single women.

Born in Flushing and raised in Brooklyn, this New Yorker finally discovered her passion for ministering to and empowering single women. TC is not a pro at managing love and romantic relationships; she has made plenty of mistakes. But now she allows God to lead her decision-making especially when it comes to matters of the heart. This is precisely the mind-set she wants to impress upon others.

TC loves practicing "Me" time by traveling, having spa treatments and drinking tea while reading murder mysteries. Teaching Bible studies, leading cell groups, serving in her church are a few ways she spreads the Word and works of God. TC simply enjoys exercising her spiritual gifts and natural talents inside and outside of Bridge Street AME Church, her church home.

This review is a year late and I deeply apologize for that!

Editing was good. Layout was mostly consistent, but some devotions started on the left while most others started on the right. At least one Scripture was given for each day's reading, which was great! I'm not a fan of The Message at all, so that was a detracting point for me. Most of the habits that T.C. Spellen encourages are healthy and many of them I could relate to myself. However, the devotion mentioning exercise and dietary habits prompted me to write a lengthy blog post outlining the dangers of Christians getting involved in yoga. Encouraging Christians to get involved in spiritually damaging routines severely dropped the rating I could have given this book. Many Christians treat this issue in a very off-the-cuff manner, as did the author, and I am unable to let that pass in my evaluation of this devotional. If the session on exercise is skipped over, the rest is good encouragement.

The audience this appears to be aimed at is the Christian single lady who has, prior to picking up this devotional, a very casual, arms-length, do-as-I-please-even-if-Scripture-says-its-wrong relationship with God. This person is encouraged throughout the devotional readings to change this attitude and be more deliberate about their faithwalk, to learn what God expects of them as they relate to Him in the various aspects of life spent in the waiting room.

Many of the habits Spellen encourages have been part of my own life for many years, and I wholeheartedly stand behind them. I am not in the Waiting Room myself, but for those that are, and for those who could use some encouragement to tighten up their faithwalk and draw closer to God in the process, this devotional is worth checking out.

This is my book so of course I think it is an excellent read for women who are not only waiting for or seeking a husband, but who are also in need of a relationship with God. Too often we invest our time and energy in the wrong things while waiting for our hearts' desires. Meanwhile God is patiently waiting on us to want Him and to seek Him out. Especially since He has everything we need and want in the palm of His hands. When we neglect to build a relationship with God, we make poor choices that have serious spiritual, emotional, mental and sometimes physical consequences. The Waiting Room, is made-up of 31 spiritual and personal disciplines to be engaged daily as a way to develop a profound relationship with God. Disciplines such as praying, fasting, meditating, de-cluttering, and so on mature us on many levels and help lead us to living purposefully while waiting for God to bless us with a husband.

I really liked this book and wish that I would have read it sooner. TC provides a road map to reclaiming and redeeming what past relationships took. And, a guide to preparing for marriage. T.C. includes discussions on taming the tongue, creating boundaries, and praying. She also gives great tips on simplifying life overall.

These are things that I learned, before I got married. But, I think T.C.’s book could've helped me recover from the Mr. Wrongs and prepare for Mr. Right a lot faster.

Great Read

I read this while fasting. I was able to do quite a bit of reflection on my life. It helped me press through my fast and focus on what was important, God

This book has some really great reminders when it comes to waiting on our God-given spouse. Chapters about focusing on God through various methods and how we can adjust our lives to be pointed at Him and not a man.
I have been a Christian since I was 4 years old, so the meat/verses in this book were very basic, but they still stood as great reminders as to where our focus needs to be.
Overall it’s a quick read and was neat to read as I wait for my God-given husband to come into my life, but I would say there could be more “meat” for more mature Christians.

Great book

This book was great and very informative. I would definitely recommend this book to others who are just starting out on their journey in the waiting room and need motivation and practical steps on how to endure.

Buyer beware. The intro to this book specifically states it is not not married, divorced, or widows. This book is only for virgins who have never had a significant other. I feel this should have been stated in the overview, since it was written for such a narrow window of audience.

Good

The waiting room is a good read while waiting on the Lord for His will to be manifested in your life for more reasons than just a husband. All of God's children need a little thug at times.
