Penguins in their natural habitat, photographed in glorious full color. The extraordinary and adorable antics of penguins attract thousands of tourists every year to remote and icy locations. Penguins never fail to make people smile; wild penguins waddle up and inspect us as if we were just another kind of flightless creature walking on two legs. In this book, the vibrant world of penguins is shown in all its glory by David Tipling, who has trekked to beautiful and faraway locations to capture these birds in their natural habitats. Tipling's gorgeous full-color images catch moments rarely witnessed by humans. He shows us an Adélie penguin speeding through water at 25 mph; a line of King penguins in a snow squall; doting Emperor penguin parents with their fluffy chick; a young penguin nuzzling a camera's telescopic lens; a Rockhopper penguin hopping from rock to rock; a large social gathering of Chinstrap penguins; the striking plumage and courtship display of a male Macaroni penguin; and much more. The book features 139 striking photographs of these unique birds taken in the wild. In the accompanying text, Tipling profiles all of the world's seventeen penguin species, and chapters cover every aspect of their lives and behavior, including migration, defending against predators, and life in extreme climates. This stunning book is a celebration of penguins that is sure to captivate any bird lover, wildlife enthusiast, or photography buff.
David Tipling is renowned for his wildlife photographs and writings and is coauthor of the critically acclaimed Birds & People. Their previous books together include The Enigma of the Owl and The Empire of the Eagle.
An extremely beautiful book of Penguins. Amazing high-quality pictures with just the right amount of text. Published in 2013, the sad thing is that I picked this brand-new copy up at a discount bookseller for $1.95. It's almost embarrassing. I find it sad because the author/photographer David Tipling put this book together with a lot of talent, love, and time spent. All of the photos except for a handful were taken by David. At this price I think everyone should go out and buy a copy until they are all gone. I'm sure that some places are charging a lot more than what I paid. My only complaint is that the book was printed and bound in China. Damn China.
Penguins in the Wild is a gorgeous book, especially if you happen to love penguins (like I do). With gorgeous, full color (varying in size) pictures it was fun to look through and read the accompanying passages. The little captions were full of interesting facts and impressions from the author. The book was organized into sections: Introduction, Penguin land, On the move, Courtship, Family life, Survival, Penguins and us and Penguin fact file (+References/index). I thoroughly enjoyed it and would recommend it - especially to any penguin or animal lovers out there. Though as a bit of a disclaimer if you're going to show this to younger children you may want to screen the "Survival" section first - there is maybe one or two pictures I'm not sure parents would be comfortable showing young kids (I think it depends on the kids). . Overall though, a great book to look through!
