I received an advanced reader copy of this book through a GoodReads group. I was not previously familiar with this author and did not know what to expect based on the title. But after reading through it, I am blown away and think every LDS adult needs a copy of this book! It is a companion volume to the Relief Society/Priesthood manual for 2014, Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Fielding Smith. The chapters in this book parallel the manual and act as an extra resource for preparing the lessons. Trina Boice has collected everything you need into this handy “Ready Resource.”

It is the ultimate guide for supplementing your study/teaching! If you serve in another auxiliary like Young Women or Primary or are unable to attend your meetings regularly, this book can help you get more out of the lessons. It is so good, you may be tempted to teach/study out of it without remembering the manual, so make sure you pair them together. The summaries at the beginning of the chapters could help if for some reason you needed to wing a last-minute lesson. Don’t get me wrong—this book should not replace the manual or good lesson preparation, but definitely keep it in your church bag, refer to it often, and you won’t have to worry about looking up ideas for your lesson or further study suggestions anymore.

The obvious audience is Relief Society or Priesthood teachers, but everyone would benefit from studying the material in this book as we go through the Joseph Fielding Smith manual next year. All the prep work is done for you! There are ideas for object lessons, scripture mastery verses, references to Preach My Gospel, pictures to display, quotes to share, talks to study, and even links for videos to show. There is a challenge to give to the members to help them apply the teachings from each lesson. Also, each chapter even ends with ready-made handouts so you can just run off copies. I can’t think of anything else you could need! You just choose the sources that will best benefit those you are teaching.

I am super excited to use this book and share it with others. I plan to read the talks referenced at the end of the Introduction regarding teaching by the spirit and also look up the Relief Society blogs listed at the end of the book. Then as we go through the lessons next year, I will use this as a gospel study guide for further enrichment. My only negative is that I didn’t know about this series earlier!

I am really impressed with this resource book!
I mean REALLY IMPRESSED!

This gives a teacher of Relief Society a plentiful supply of materials to supplement the lessons from the Church Manual.

In this resource guide you get for EACH LESSON:

*Hymn selections that correlate with the lesson.
*A brief summary of the lesson.
*Quotes from Apostles and Prophets
*Picture ideas to use from the Gospel Art Kit
*Church video suggestions

and my favorite part...

*it gives you OBJECT LESSONS to use to bring more understanding to the lesson!

But that's not all...
You also get:
*Ensign articles to use

Click on picture to enlarge enough to read
*Scripture Mastery verses to expound the lesson
*Correlating pages from Preach My Gospel
*AND a CHALLENGE to help the class members put the lesson to practice in their own lives.

And if that is not enough...
*There are handouts all ready made for you!

This makes teaching SO EASY!

This is a really neat book! Each of the chapters deals with one chapter in the Joseph Fielding Smith book that the LDS Church will be using for 2014. Each chapter includes songs that go with the lesson, quotes by other general authorities that go along with the lesson, handout ideas, object lesson ideas and a challenge to keep the members of the classes thinking about the lesson all week. I also like the introduction that talks about the way the instructors should be teaching these classes. So often, what is intended to be a discussion becomes just reading the lesson paragraph by paragraph, and that's super boring! The introduction has great ideas on things the instructor can do to not be just doing the boring reading. What a great book!

I really can see the value in having this resource. I love how many resources, quotes, videos, talks, artwork that are associated with each chapter. For the non-teacher, this is a great resource to get more out of your personal study. I sometimes miss Relief Society and do have to study on my own. This will be awesome for me to use during those times as to get more self learning. As a teacher, I would absolutely recommend this guide.

This author must have a fantastic imagination to be able to come up with this many amazing resource ideas. But my favorite thing about this book is the object lesson suggestions. Although it is not Relief Society, I'm finding these suggestions a great help with what I am teaching. Honestly, if I were teaching Relief Society, though, I would be making use of this material every single week—music ideas, teaching techniques, gospel art and video suggestions. What a great aid!

Author Trina Boice has compiled an extensive and in depth resource guide for leaders, teachers and individuals who are studying the 2014 Relief Society/Priesthood manual Teachings of Presidents of the Church Joseph Fielding Smith. This manual will save the teacher so much time by offering suggestions for songs, artwork, General Authority talks/quotes, videos, handouts and so much. Each of the suggestions are conviently layed out to coordinate with each lesson. Each selection offers many choices and are not prepared lesson. There are handouts included that have quotes that work great on cardstock paper. The teacher will find exciting resources that will strengthen the lesson in a way that each member of the class will find to be of great benefit.

I had never used a manual like this before in preparing classes. As Relief Society President I found the choices to make my personal study more Spiritual and this overflowed into the classroom. I used this manual to chose the songs for the class. I loved that there were many songs to chose from but I did not have to do the research for them. I like choices and do not like to have a prepared lesson so this was great for my needs

As a former Seminary Teacher, I know the value of good object lessons. I always try to implement them into my teachings, I found the object lessons in this manual to be well thought out and easy to adapt into the lesson. They work so well with the official church manual for the year. There are so many resources for each lesson that there is no way to use them all but they will enrich the teacher none the less because she will be armed with knowledge. This will no doubt strengthen the Spirit in the classroom. I found that it enriched my personal study to a higher level even before the lesson ever was taught in the classroom.

The manual offers quotes that add Spiritual and up-to-date information from General Authorities. I highly recommend this book to any adult Latter Day Saint who wants more power from the lesson manual with less work. I shared the manual with my first counselor and she could not believe the handouts. She loved the manual as well.

My husband is Elders Quorum Leader and he was impressed most with the quotes and video suggestions. I loved this manual and will be using it all year. I found that I was spending more time with the manual while using this resource guide because it made me think on a higher level. I hope to find a new one each year to assist with updated resources. The title says it all “The Ready Resource”.
