"Darkling Light... And Other Short Stories" is a collection of ten short tales from Jason J.R. Gaskell. The collection includes a unique approach to addiction in "The Therapist", a killer on the loose in the Nigerian jungle in "The Nightwalker", a phobias workshop gone wrong in "The Great Shave", and a brutal antihero in "Coincidence".
"Darkling Light: And Other Stories" (2013, 2021) is an entertaining collection of macabre stories written by one author—Jay Gaskell. Not exactly brilliant, but each story held my interest from start to finish. As with all such anthologies, some stories are better than others, but none is a clunker. Jerry Bradshaw’s narration is effective. Recommended. At my request, I was given this free audiobook and have voluntarily left this review.
I really enjoyed the first story, “The Therapist.” It was dark, gritty and unexpected—very nice. The rest of the nine stories weren’t too bad. It might a British colloquialism, but the use of ‘was stood’ sprinkled through many of the stories was jarring. How can one use a past tense word with present action? Again, this could translate well with the folks across the pond.
“Nightwalker,” was much too long in my opinion. Any chance of real suspense kept seeping out as the story continued.
“The Zoo,” was entertaining.
The other seven had their moments.
I did enjoy the first person narrative through each short. It truly propelled the reader into the storylines. Nicely done.
